NEW YORK, November 30.—The stock market. started in today where it left off last night. Opening prices wete practically all higher. The list was still under the influence of the idea that the re-entrance of Henry Ford into the automobie distributing | trade would vastly stimulate produc tion in all affiliated lines. Money r newed at 4 per cent, indicating t the hardening of the rate earlier in the week had been an incident of month-end settlements, clusion was that there to a renewal of speculation fa rise on an extended scale. Open Until 5:30 P.M. I g e Today and Tomorrow riety of them were in active dema although in many instances it was difficult to see the connection with | the Ford Co. Then the mercha ing shares were taken up and the two most prominent mail order stock: advanced to mew high points, Mont- gomery Ward at 105, the best for the present no-par_shares, and Sears Roe- buck above 85, also the maximum | under the present form of capitaliza- tion. It was easy matter for peol operators to put up quotations for their favorites and they did not hesi- tate to take advantage of 8. Steel Climl The optimism was not expressed solely in the specialties stocks, how- ever. U. S. Steel, selling ex the $1.75 quarterly dividend, more than made up the amount which come off the price. General Motors was more hes| tant. Opening fractionally higher receded afterward. There was, on other hand, no discoverable nervol ness about competition in the action of most of the independent wmotor stock: About all that could be s: was that they were not as active as usual. The most encouraging feature of the market to the conservatively minded was the better demand for the rail- road shares. This came about mnot- withstanding the car loadings state- ment, which showed a falling off on the week not only from last year but from 1925. Against this exhibit it was urged that the relation of prices to earnings was still far more favorable in the case of the rails than the indus- trials. Uniorr Pacific, which had reported gains in October, and Canadian Pacific, which had reported losses, were both higher, the last named being the more favored. Canadian Pacific has the ad- vantage of an international market. Bears Predict Awakening. Opinion_as to the justification for the marking up of stock quotations was not unanimous by any ‘means. There was a minority which held that the Street was ignoring undeniable facts about the industrial situation, and which confidently predicted that an awakening was near at hand. Gossip in the brokerage houses, however, was all the other way. It was freely reported that this or that prominent banker was buying this or that industrial and that the “shorts,” such hardy ones as have survived, were to be “run in.” Most of the time the pessimists had the worst of it, but that simply goes to prove the old maxim that a speculative current once in motion is hard to stem. Total bank clearings in the Na- tional Capital during November re- vealed a small decline in comparison with the previous month and Novem- ber, 1926, according to the summaries made hy the Washington Clearing | House Association today. November clearings amounted to $114,264,134.46, compared with §118. 066,537.44 in the same month last year and $116,851,774.11 in October this year. The slump in November clear- ing, combined with the declines in other months since June have been sufficlent to make the total clearings in Washington for the first 11 months of the year fall below the figures for the same period last yvear. The 11 months’ total for this i 316,074.58, as against § 9 for the same months in As the clearings now stand it ill be a close race for the full year for the 1927 clearings to surpass the total for 1926. The 1926 total for the year was $1,392,580,051.65. Clagett, general commer- clal superintendent. L A. Fleming Is 77 Years Old. 1. A. (“Pop™) Fleming, the grand old man of financial journalism, quietly observed his seventy-seventh birthday yesterday at his home, 2700 Connecti- cut avenue, surrounded by many friends who called to congratulate him. Mr. Fleming omitted his usual reception this year, as he found this event a little too ruch of a strain on his strength. But he could not keep his birthday a secret from those who have known him the most intimately. One of his many gifts was an im- mense bouquet from the luncheon group of bankers. The dean of Washington's financial editors is still young in spirit and his mind is as active as it ever was. His weekly articles on local and world finance in The Sunday Star are read with deep interest and en- joyment by thousands who follow the trends in banking and investments. For years Mr. Fleming has kept up with all the latest developments in the banking world and in all his writings has urged the average in- vestor to consult his banker or broker before taking any chances with his savings. He has been one of the most loyal supporters of the work of the District Bankers’ Association and has never missed one of the annual conventions. His is truly a most remarkable career. For more than 60 years “Pop” has been closely connected with finance. His first step toward fame as a writer was taken on the Chicago Board of Trade at the age of 15 or 16 years when he handled grain quotations. His friends say that the most sensational news ‘“scoop” he wrote during his Chicago days brought to public attention the great- est “corner” in wheat ever known. Investment Trust Shares Offered.
