BLACK JOKER BY ISABEL OSTRANDER, (Continued from Yesterd: “Shot, I think!” Janet's voice trembled. “There were stains on his + shirt and from his mouth! “Through the lungs, then.” Sawyer nodded in a matter-of-fact manner. “Wonder who got him?"” It looks as though there had been a terrible struggle!” Janet deseribed the appearance of thé room, and-her companion suggested: “Maybe a fight with some of his own gang. Did you get what you went after?” “No,” Janet replied without hesita- tion. “When I saw him lying there like that 1—I forgot everything else! “Then must you see Nat tonight RBawyer asked. “Won't you Jet me take you back to town, to Mrs. Kerr?” “Oh, I—I couldn’t!” she exclaimed. “There's a reason I can't explain! I only wanted to find out from Nat who my—my father's best friend was—the one he trusted most. I've got to see that person now!” Her voice had trembled again, this time with an emotion which she could no longer control, and her companion scanned her face sharply in the glow of the dash lamp. “It's—as serious as that!” was oddly hushed, ‘Yes. Mr. Sawyer, you knew my father, of course ou must know how every one has lied to me, kept me in the dark! Mrs. Kerr the most of all! 1 was_ told that my father had gone abroad to search for me, tuat he had sent messages of his postponed re- turn—all lies! My father did not go abroad, none of you have known where he was! He hasn’'t been seen since the. day before I reached America!” Sawyer jammed the brakes. “How do you know that?” he de- manded. Mr. Mariott told me, then Norman. But Norman told me more! He said that my father was dead—boasted that they had killed him!” The young man’s ruddy face went white und. with a sharp, half- #mothered exclamation he bent to- ward her, “Miss Dane! You don't believe that! You know it must have been some trick tp make vou tell whatever you might have learned!” His tone was protesting, but Janet divined that he was attempting to convince himself as much as to re- ussure her. “Can you, can any of you, deny that my father has disappeared? Can vou- prove that you have heard from hini direct, that he is anywhere on the iace of the earth? There was a little pause and then he replied frankly: “No, Miss Dane, we can’t. We've all been wild with anxiety, but we lept the truth from you to spare you Dain and tried ih every way to pro- ct you. Your father does things on his own initiative and we had hoped that he had dropped out of sight for =ome good reason of his own, for the yurpose of bringing off some masterly coup against both factions that have tried to beat us out in this game. He s too astute to have been caught, pecially by Norman's gang! It was « cruel attempt to frighten you and Lreak your spirit, siothing more!” Janet shook her head. “I am certatn that it is the truth!” There was aworld. of . desolation. in lier {one. - “Please- .drive on, Mr. Bawyer. I didn‘t aan to tell you, first, or any one, biit.that scene back there shook my nerve, and it seemed as i T couldn’t carry the burden alone any longer! I want to 8o to the per- 2on in whom my father confided most, 10 learn his wishes in a certain mat- ter, and then I have friends -of- my owwn to whom I can go.” Evidently realizing ¢ JSutility of further argument ‘tlefi, JMWwyer drove vn to the hangar,. but Nat_ had not returned nor had -any’ Wotd come Irom him. *“I'll:drive you back to- the city, of course, but if you will not go to Mrs. Xerr, I don’t really know what I am to do with you, Miss Dane!” the voung man remarked. “I don’t live there myself and haven't any friends I could take you to without an ex- ylanation,” “l have some mvney of my own; herhaps you can arrange for quarters for me at some hotel. touch with my frlends tomorrow, Janet replied wearily, but as deter- mined as ever, “You can bring Nat 10 _me there when you find him.” ‘With this Sawyer was forced to be content, but he privately, decided on certain plans of his own for the mor- row, and conversation hetween them His tone l?t“ed on the return journey to the city. : He found rooms for her in an old- fashioned hotel and took leave of her, promising to telephone in the morn- ing, and Janet followed the porter to her suite. She was utterly worn out by the" events through which she had passed; grief for her father had taken-its toll of her and to it was added now her suspense as to Philip Mariott's fate and the over- Wwhelming -horror of her experience in the house by the willows. . She slept, but her slumber was troubled by horrid visions and morning. found her depressed and still shaken. ‘With two of his ruffians bound and helpless, and only the third and the woman left to aid him, Norman must have been captured by the sail- ots from the yacht even if he had killed Philip first. She had nothing more to fear from him, though May Carlin might still have to be reckon- ed with, but Janet felt little concern. She had not failed to divine Ranny Sawyer's attitude on the previous night, however; that earnest young man had made up his mind to pro- tect her in spite of her wishes in the matter and she was heartily sick of espionage. She knew now where to find Nat if she wanted him but first she must know what had happened to Philip. In lieu of baggage she paid for a night's lodging in advance and the sun was not yet high when she left the hotel, ostensibly to go in person to the station for her bags, but in- stead wandered about the city in a very fever of impatience. At its best speed, the yacht could not have reached the remote island again until the night before; it would not make Boston until the afternoon and night would come before Janet could hope to learn anything concerning Philip. At Boston, however, she knew there would be a message await- ing him from Luey telling him of her own disappearance, and surely it would bring him post-haste to the city. If she could find the house where he had held her in duress. and manage to watch it herself unseen she would know the truth. If he had escaped he would come there! The Priscilla Gray tea shop! That had been the name on the establish- ment opposite and, waiting until dusk had fallen, lest Lucy's sharp eyes re- cognize her, Janet found the ad- dress in a telephone book and made her way there. She found it to be a modest but very dainty little restau- rant presided over by two refined el- derly women and, ordering tea and muffins, seated herself at a table be- hind the curtains of the front window. There across the street was the house which she had entered with such Joyous anticipation .of meeting her father! There, in one of those flaunt. ing window boxes filled with bloom lay buried the message she had deciphered, the secret of this whole mysterious affair which was still in the main a mystery to her! She could not remain more than a half-hour at most, in the tea shop; where could she hide when darkness had fallen to keep her vigil through the night? Then all at once she caught her lip betwben her teeth and clasped her hands tightly beneath the table. The front door opposite was opening slowly, and outlined by the glow of the light behind her a woman's figure appeared! Was it Lucy? She hesi- tated & moment in the gloom of the vestibule and then emerged and stood upon the steps, gazing anxiously up and down. . It was not Lucy but a tall woman with a splendid figure and masses of pale-gald hair beneath her hat and Janet realized instantly that she had seen her before. Her features were almost classically beautifyl, #ut-spmes how they should have betn aged, lined, the hair gray and that -erect form bowed. . , . It was the woman who had come to her as the false Letty and lured her to the house! The conviction came to Janet in a flash, but she knew, too, that some- time, somewhere, she had encounter- ed the woman as she now was. It was dim, a faint memory, and while she searched her thoughts for the elusive recollection the limousine in which she herself had' twice ridden pulled up at the curb. The woman turned laughingly to some one behind her and, with the ges- ture, Janet knew the truth. She was the “Mrs. Graham” wro with a male companion had posed as Amer- ican tourists and had picked her up almost at the convent gates, taking her to Marseille in their car! Philip THE. EV. had told her long ago that they were his agents. . . . Then a low cry came from the girl's lips, for a_man had followed the woman out of the vestibule and, slipping his hand beneath her arm in an intimate, protective fashion, piloted her down the. steps and into the waiting car, ~ It rolled smoothly away, but Janet dat motionless, staring at the place ‘where it had stood. The man was Philip Mariott! CHAPTER XLVI “A Face From the Dead OR a long, time Janet sat at the table in the Mttle’tea-shop, but her muffins hardened and the tea itself grew epld. Philip Mar- iott was safe, the sailors had béen in time to rescue him, but it was not the Philip of that Island dream. He had never existed-save in her own too credulous heart. The man who had bent in such loverlike fashion over the golden haired woman as he asrsist- ed her down to the car was the Ma iott who was her Sworn antagonist! He had not hesitatéd to lure her to his house with a cruel false message about her father; but she had scored one against him when she drugged him and took from him the crypto- gram, but he had retaliated! He was determined to win it away from her, and when they were captured by Norman, and he saw that neither shock nor grief nor fear would make her give up the secret, he had tried a counterfeit of love! He told her that he played the game according to his own rules, and how easily she had been deceived! What a little fool he must think her! Jan. et's cheeks burned with the recollec- tion. How clearly she could see now that her eyes were opened! There hadn’t been any mistaking his atti- tude toward that woman just now; there was possession in it, and pride and—love. Aware at last that the elderly wait- ress was hovering near, regarding hi with curiosity not untinged with un- easiness, Janet beckoned to her, paid her bill and went out into the shad- ows, Her dream was over; shattered! It did not matter, though, nothing mattered but to carry out her father's plans, for even if he had loved her it would have been hopelcss, They Wwere separated forever by this hideous affair that had cost her father his life! They were as far apart as the poles and never could they have met again in those hours when death stared them in the face. Still—oh, if the memory of that time could only have been left to her unchanged! She wandered on, heedless of the assing of time and unaware in the depths of her bitter disillusionment that a car had purred softly out of the shadows beyond the tea shop and followed slowly in her wake, through every twist and turning. It was only when the blaze of lights in the theatri- cal district brought her to a consciou: ness of her surroundings that she was aware of gay, jostling throngs pouring out of the playhouse and realized that it must be well on toward midnight. There remained still the accomplish- ment of her task! If she had been duped by her father's enemy in the most cowardly, despicable fashion, it was her own fault for lowering her flag, but at least he had failed in his design! He had not learned the secret from her nor succeeded in persuading her to renounce the vow she had made to herself and now, soon, he would realize that she alone was responsible for the final collapse of his cherished scheme. The long line of taxis at the public stand on the great, blazing thorough- fare was emptying fast, but Janet hailed one and asked: ‘Have you plenty of petrol?” uice, you mean?” The chauffeur, a_big Irishman, grinned jovialiv. “Sure, miss; is it to Albany you'll be wantin’ me to take you?” “No, Mineola,” Janet smiled wanly. | “I—T’ll.8show you just where when we et there.” She jumped in and, shutting the fdoor, sank back on the shabby cush- fons, closing her eyes. The day's ceaseless wanderings had wearied her more than she knew and the reaction from her surprise and disillusionment left her tired, tired! The car which had followed her from the tea shop was still just behind and turned off Broadway when hers did, following again through street after street to the bridge, but Janet would scarcely have cared had she known; to find Nat now and through him reach a real friend of her father, that was t'ie one thought that filled her sick soul.
