~ SOLOMON ISLANDS LAND OF ASSASSINS Ferocious Natives, Who Mas- sacred British Officials, Un- Impressed by Civilization. The Solomon Islands, where natives are reported to have massacred Brit- ish officials and a group of native police, have long had the blackest of reputations because of the ferocity ot their inhabitants, according to a bulletin from the headauarters of the Natlonal Geographic Society. *The islands were given thelr pres- ent name by their Spanish discoverer because of their supposed richness in gold " says the bulletin. “But the ‘zold’ turned out to be worthless iron pyrites, and a subsequent French visitor called them*‘The Land of As- sagsins.’ “Civilization and Christianity have never made any marked impress ‘on the Solomon Islanders. British law has been observed to a certain extent bacause of fear: but little time elapses inany of the island communities with- out a murder. Natives Black, With Kinky Hair. “The natives are Melanesians, much blacker than the light-colored Poly- negians of Samoa and the Marquesas. The typical Solomon Islander has kinky. black hair, but in many cases it has been covered with a lime paste made from coral, until it has been bleached to a pinkish tan. Many of the men have sinister expresisons and they seem to have a veritable instinct to kill. As one visitor phrased their attitude: Every stranger is an en- emy, and it is, of course, a virtue to kill_enemies. *‘There has been no cohesion among the people. In the old days head- hunting was the chief combined occu- pation and sport of the adult males. Any nearby village was a fair source of heads. If a more ambitious expe- dition was desired the warriors climbed into their war canoes, visited a neighboring island, and, if success- ful. eame back with their boats loaded with the keads of men, women and children. These were hung up in the community ‘clubhouse’ or in the canoe houses. “British control has about put an end to head-hunting, but the desi to kill remains and crops out in mis- cellaneous murders. The favorite method of attack has always been to spring upon the victim from behind and finish him off before he knows i DParis whut 13 afoot. The first rule of con- duct a newly arrived white man learns in the Solomons is never to allow a native to walk behind him. In- stances are on record where trusted natives have begged their white bene- factors not tu walk in front of them while on the trail. The temptation to strike, they assert, is almost irre- sistible. *The Solomons, 900 miles northeast of Australia, are among the most re- mote of the Pacific islands; yet, save for the Ladrones, and perhaps the Marshalls, they were the earliest found by Europeans. They were dis- covered, strangely, from Peru, where adventurers, thirsting for more gold, heard rumors of a continent close by to the west. The expedition, under Medana, sailed in 1567, and managed, like the expedition of Magellan, to cross the vast Pacific_without findini Dr. Caldwell’s THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTO Woociward & Lotrop Down Stairs Store any of the many important islands. In the Solomons they had numerous brushes with the natives, and a num- ber of the voyagers were killed. “After Medana's l\\;o ships returm to New Spain the Solomons were for two centuries, being rediscovered bv a French expedition in 1767. “Great Britaln established a pro- tectorate over the southern islands of the Solomon group in 1893, In 1899 an agreement between Great Britain and Germany -gave the -two .large northern islands, Bougainville and Buka, to the latter country. Since the World War these former German possessions have been administered by Australia. “The total area of the Solomon Islands s about 16,000 square miles. The population is approximately 200,000 natives and a wmere handful of whites and Asiatics.” 3 Rules Keep You Healthy Dr. Caldwell watched the results of constipation for 47 years and be- lieved that, no matter how careful people are of their health, diet and exercise, constipation will occur from time to time, regardless of how much one tries to avoid it. Of next impor- |; tance, then, is how to treat it when it comes. Dr. Caldwell always was in favor of getting as close to nature as possible, hence his remedy for constipation, known as Dr. Cald- well’s Syrup Pepsin, is a mild vege- table compound. It cannot harm the most delicate system and is not-a habit-forming preparation. Syrup Pepsin is pleasant-tasting, and young- sters love it. It does not gripe. Thousands of mothers have written us to that effect. Dr. Caldwell did not approve of drastic physics and purges. He did not believe they were good for hu- man beings to put into their sys- tem. In a practice of 47 years he never saw any reason for their use when a medicine like Syrup Pepsin will empty the bowels just as promptly, more cleanly and gently, without griping and harm to the system, Keep free from constipation! It robs your strength, hardens your arteries and brings on premature old age. Do not let a day go by without a bowel movement. Do not sit and hope, but go to a druggist and get one of the generous bottles of Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin. Take the proper dose that night and by morn- ing you will feel like a different per- Y7, Cuttercer. D AT AGE 83 son.
