ST CE OPEN UNTIL 11 P.M, AT et oments for The Evening, Star SITUATIONS THRASHED A BRITISH OFFICER. 20-YEAR-OLD giant, {ll-dressed, uneducated and with the face of a Greek statue, was hired as a teamster in 1756 to transport some of the British army supplies for the French and Indlan war. A spruce English lieutenant undertook one day to swear at the young giant. The latter swore back with a lurid vehemence. The lleutenant in a rage struck him across the face with the flat of his sword. The teamster promptly gave the gold-laced officer the severest thrashing of his life. The Colonial youth who thus dared raise an impious hand against the sacred person of a_ British officer was “Dan” Morgan of New Je He was a raw, illiterate fellow who had run aw from b Hunterdon County, N. J., home at the age of 16 because of a quarrel with his father. Moving to Virginia, he had worked as a day laborer until he saved enough money to buy a pair of horses and a cart. Then he became one of Gen. Braddock's team- sters. He was in the same trade when his quarrel with the lieutenant occurred. Although he thrashed the officer. Morgan was overpowered by the soldlers, who stood nearby, and was treated to 500 lashes of HELP—MALE. I (Continued.) The lieutenant made public apology for his own behavior. G An Indian uprising in Virginia next year gave Morgan his first experience as a soldier, It was at this time that he first met young Col. George Wash- ington, future President of the unborn United States. So gallantly did MofRan bear himself in this cam- paign that he received a_lieutenancy. While riding on scout duty near a militia fort in 1768, he was ambushed and fired on by Indians. One bullet struck him in the neck, coming out through the mouth and knocking away all the teeth on the left side of his jaw. Morgan threw his arms about his horse’s neck nd galloped back to the fort through a hail of bullets Peace was declared soon afterward and Morga married and settled down as a farmer. Then, in 1775, the revolution began. Morgan was made a cap- tain of Virginia riflemen and at the head of 96 back- woodsmen went to the front. He was sent with his company on Benedict Arnold’s fll-fated expedition against Quebec. Morgan and his men formed the Army’s advance guard. On the 1st of January, 1776, Arnold and Montgomery made their famous attack on Quebec. Montgomery was killed, Arnold was ' TRUCTION COURSES. HELP—FEMALE. A NGIAGES —SPANISH. Morgan at once rallied the little army and, taking full command, “rushed” the city. With his rifiemen he smashed a powerful British battery, then plunged headlong into the streets of the “lower town” of Quebec, fighting his way through the British ranks with a wild recklessness that carried him and his militia company far ahead of the other patriot troops. Cut off from aid, hemmed in on every side, he and his handful of backwcodsmen were at last made prisoners. Morgan brcke down and cried from sheer rage. On his release from captivity he was made a colonel of the 11th Virginia Regiment. Later he was placed in command of 300 crack shots known as Rangers.” With these Morgan scourged the Bri impeding the enemy’s movements and cutting off_their supplies, He and his Rangers were hurried North to help Gen. Gates check Burgoyne's invasion of New York State from Canada. So gallantly did the tangers and their leader conduct themselves at the Battle of Saratoga that the captured British general exclaimed, seizing Morgan's hand: * you are in command of the best regiment on earth.” For angrily refusing to join Gates in the con- spiracy to rob Washington of chief command of the American forces Morgan was deprived of any reward MISCELLANEOUS AFTER THE BATTLE OF COWPENS. for his services at Saratoga. In disgust, he resigned from the Army. But he was soon back in the field again, and went as brigadier general to the Carolinas to reinforce Gates there, It was at the Battle of Cow- pens, S. C., that Morgan won his greatest victory, There, with' a ragged, tired army largely made up of old men and boys, he beat a strong British force under Tarleton on January 17, 1781, leaving almost as many dead Englishmen on the field as the whole patriot army that took part in the fray. The kng- lish lost 230 in killed and wounded, and 600 were taken prisoners. Morgan's loss was 12 killed and 61 wounded. From a sfandpoint of brilliant strategy and fearless bravery the Battle of Cowpens ranks as perhaps the most important in all the Revolution. Shortly afterward Morgan fell vietim to inflam- matory rheumatism and was obliged to retire from the Army. He went back to farming, grew very rich, served several vears in Congress and died at his country home on Ju 6, 18 At the funeral, following the dead soldier to his grave, marched a little band of war-worn old men— survivors of that first militia rifle company which Morgan had led to Canada more than a quarter cen- tury before.
