Soon he begged the French government to let him colonize, in France's name, the rich Mississippi Vall The plea was rejected.” As balm for the refusal Joliet re- ceived a _tifle to the Island of Anticosti. There he built a fort and made his home. Scarcely had he gathered about him a flourishing community when the English swooped down upon his beloved island, in 1690, captured it, destroyed his fort and houses, selzed his entire fortune and took his wife prisoner. At 45 the soldier of fortune was forced to begin life all over. In no way discouraged, Joliet turned explorer once more and plunged again into the wilder- ness. He explored nearly all the coast of Labrador, sought for mines on Lake Superior and, at last, in 1707, was rewarded by a new grant of land near Quebec, There, three years later, he died. RECORDS OF THE TRIP LOST. forces with him. On May 17, 1672, Joliet, Marquette and five followers began a voyage compared to which a a trip around the world nowadays would be mere child’s play. The explorer traveled South to within a few days’ sail of the river's mouth. Then, fearing lest Spanish attack might ruin their.plans, they turned back. Joliet had taken coplous notes of each step of the route, had drawn careful maps of the whole dis- trict through which they passed and had written ex- haustive accounts of every incident. He and Mar- quette fparted on the way North, and Joliet hurried toward Canada with his news. In the Spring of 1674, when well on his way to Quebec, Jollet's canoe was upset while shooting the Lachine Rapids, and every paper, map and note was Jost. Heartsick over this destruction, he neverthe- less set to work copying from memory his maps and rewriting his recollections of the voyage. Hunt- ers and traders had heard from lying Indians all sorts of weird stories about the country along its banks and about the wonderful sea into which it was supposed to run. The shores of the river to the South were supposed to be peopled by monsters and demons. The mouth of the Mississippi might be in China, in the South Sea or in the Atlantic, No one knew. At any rate, it was to the Southwapd, and the South was where America’s fabled riches were thought to be hidden, Joliet, wearying of trade and of Indian warfare, began to dream of exploring the Mississippl. Fron- tenae, Governor of Canada, authorized the scheme. But all that the Canadian government could afford Joliet by way of equipment was one bark canoe and one Indian guide. With this scanty outfit Joliet began his journey of discovery. To strengthen his expedition he visited the Jesuit mission on Lake Supe- rior and met Pere (Father) Marquette, who joined HELP—DOMESTIC. OUIS JOLIET (or Jolliet) was the first of Amer- jca’'s great soldiers of fortune to be born in America. He was the son of a Quebeec wagon Mmaker. Brought up under Jesuit teachings, he was de- signed for the priesthood. But, in 1667, when he was 22, he scandalized all Quebec by throwing aside his robe and embarking on the perilous career of forest adventurer. Into the Western wilderness he went, in search of furs. There, like Du Lhut and other “forest run- ners,” he fought, tricked and bargained with the savages and, incidentally, caught the fever of explora- tion.
