Franklin 9503 FURTHER RECOVERY IN STOCK MARKET Pullman, Bulls’ Favorite, at New Top Price—Rails Irregular. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star, NEW YORK, September 20.—To- s stock market was strongly in- fluenced by the remarkable demon- stration of recuperative power dis- plaved in the recovery late vesterday. When such a drastic break as that of yesterday falls to bring out impor- tant liquidation, the argument in favor of underlying strength in the position is apparently unassailable. So it was not surprising that open- ing quotations today were practically all at substantially higher figures take in their contracts, and those still short of the market made haste to take in their contracts, and those stlil committed to the advance entered their buying orders, but of the two the first named was the larger ele- ment. That this was the case was proved by the hesitation which fol- iowed the initial recovery. Once the demand from belated shorts had been satisfled, prices eased off, although not losing all of their gains. Bulls Change Tactics. To a large extent speculators for the rise changed their tactics. Not Am Homes rts Am Iuternatt Am La France., Am Linseed pt THE .EVEN'ING STAR. WASHINGTON., D. C. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1927. Open. Mr. Kauffmann became a mem- ber of the board of directors of the National Metropolitan Bank in Janu- ary, 1911, serving continuously since that time. He was considered by his associates as onec of the ablest mem- bers of the board. President George W. White. of the Metropolitan today paid a glowing tribute to Mr. Kauffmann's ability and sterling qualities. “He was one of ‘Washington’s most loyal and substan- tial citizens,” said Mr. White, “and in his death, the eity suffers a great loss.” Mr. White recalled that Mr, Kauff- mann’s father also served the bank as a director for a great many years. President E. J. Stellwagen of the Union Trust Co. was another banker who expressed keen sorrow over the passing of Mr. Kauffmann. “We sat on the same benches at school, played together, were brought up together and were lifelong friends,” he said in ’Pxnressing the feeling of his personal 0ss. Commissioner to Award Honors. Commissioner Sidney F. Taliaferro will attend the meeting of Washington Chapter, American Institute of Bank- ing, tomorrow evening at the Willard, and award the prizes won by the stu- dents last year. Prizes of $50 are to be given by the clearing house, Charles J. Bell, Victor B. Deyber, Wil- liam J. Flather, Harry V. Haynes, John Poole and George W. White. The winners will be made known for the first time. The affair opens promptly at 8 o'clock, with singing conducted by Percy S. Foster, accompanied by H. F. Kimball. The awarding of scholar- ship honors takes place so early in the evening that the candidates are ad- vised to arrive early. The speaker of the evening will be Dr. Samuel W. Graflin of New York, a brilliant orator, whose address at the' A. I. B. conven- tion in Detroit aroused intense inter- est. Mr. Graflin was a Washington clergyman for 15 years. Bank Adopts Cageless Counters. Renovations and alterations are be- ing carried on with great rapidity in the banking rooms of the Merchants Bank & Trust Co., of which Peter A. Drury is the president. The new mezzanine is to be reached by a hand- some new marble staircase now being installed, the staircase starting in the rear of the main foyer. The present tellers’ windows are to be moved back a foot or two and the cageless coun- ter plan will be adopted. Chipman Returns From Europe. A Third of i UWN%/’//////“v i g George B. Chipman, resident part- iy f / ner of Harriman & Co., was back at his office today after a 10-week trip to Europe. He visited France and Italy and spent much time in Holland. Mr. Chipman was greatly surprised over the increase in the cost of travel in Europe. The comeback of the French franc and the Italian lira has made touring vastly more expensive than at any previous time since the war. The immense amount of money now being spent by Americans all over Europe, however, is proving a tre- mendous factor in helping the various countries improve their economic condition. Trust Department in New Home. The trust department of the Wash- ington Loan & Trust Co. has moved into its new home in the building's big addition, after being housed in the Ninth street wing of the building since 1912. It is the first department to move, and is on the third floor of the new building. Andrew Parker, first vice president, has general supervision of this branch of the company's activities, and Willlam H. Baden is the trust officer. His assistant is Leonard Marbury. Frigidaire Sales Gain. C. L. McCrea, local branch man- ager of Frigidaire Corporation, an- nounced at a meeting today that the total sales of frigidaire in Washing- ton and the immediate vicinity has passed the million-dollar mark for 1927. According to Mr. McCrea, over 10,000 kitchens in Washington are to- day equipped with this electric re- frigeration and many of the new apartment houses now completing are having it installed at the time of con- struction. Personal and Other Notes. President R. Golden Donaldson of the Commercial National is taking two weeks’ rest following the great strain which he has recently been under. Robert T. Jones, manager of the stock department of G. M. P. Mur- phy & Co., has returned after a two- week vacation spent motoring in Canada, Maine and New Hampshire. ‘William C. Johnson, assistant to the president of the Federal-American National Bank, is passing his vaca- tion at Atlantic City. ‘Willlam McK. Stowell, vice presi- dent of the Lincoln National Bank, has gone to New England to pass his vacation. The Farmer & Mechanics’ National Bank has declared the regular quarterly dividend of $3 per share, payable October 1 to stock of record on September 23. Southern’s Earnings Improve. August earnings of the Kansas City Southern Railway were better than in August last year, railway operating income of §600,871 being an increase of $95,693. Railway operating reve- nues were $138,858 larger.
