FINANCIAL. FOREIGN BOND LIST MARKET LEADERS Possible Action of France Has Advertising Effect on Other Like Securities. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 1.—The effect of the widespread discussion concerning the possible redemption of the high coupon bonds of the French government has been to advertise the remainder of the foreign list to attract buying to that part of the market. Today mnot only were the French issues strong, but also the Belgians and Germans. At one time the 7 per cent bonds of France, Belgium and Germany were selling at the same price. It is realized that it will be months before refunding operations can be put through. In the meantime the French 7s and 8s, which are the only ones that may be called, offer an attraction to those who want short- term paper. Long-term investors, however, are buying the' 6% and 7 per cent French rails still under their call prices. Artificial Appearance. The old Argentine issues sold today under the price of the new 6s, which were at a slight premium. This was true also of the original issue of Aus- tralian 5s, which were below 98, while the new 5s were above that figure. Inasmuch as old issues that have been well placed usually sell higher than new ones, these price differences had an artificial appearance. Dodge 6s were at a new low level, without much activity. This bond is widely distributed and its action is a great disappointment:to those who subscribed to it in 1925 at 99 and did not take advantage of the substantial advance in the price to par to sell. Of the original $75,000,000 authorized $15,000,000 was converted into com- mon stock between 30 and 40. The next $5,000,000 of bonds are con- vertible into common at 50, but with the stock around 17 the conversion privilege -is of no present value. Mixed movements occurred in the junior railroad and industrial issues. Erle convertible 4s declined 13 points early and then rose sharply. The new 5s rallied half a point to 95. Third Avenue adjustments were firm. er following Wednesday’s heavy liquidation. The new Lorillard 5%s dropped down to 97 and R. Hoe 614s were soff and offered. well under par. The retirement of $10,000,- 000 International Paper Co. 6 per cent convertible debentures on Oc- tober 1. at. 1021 did not affect the price of* the ' listed bonds much. Humble. Oil. 58, Anaconda Copper s, Bethlehem Stpel 6s, United States Steel 58 and Goodyear 5s were all strong. Government List Strong. The market for United States Gov- ernments was strong with the new 3%s above 101. Some announcement should come from Washington next , Week on the refunding plan. - A notable feature of the day was the re- covery in most of the new 4% and 4% per cent railroad bonds, which :dc!:‘x’h last w‘;ek!.’ and l!hs activity ngth ennsylvani & Detrojt 4%s. ¥ . o, ONlo The average of the bond market in August advanced three-q ers be- ‘t::en ::1: 1st m:ld 20th of the month uen! . 0&]5\“"- seq! ly declined three. uring August the forei; bo touched & new.- high Avefa“;o n:g domalflc bonds g;mue-.uy duplicated heir previous high of last May. —— Washington Stock Exchange s ALES. n Gas 63 B—$500 at 105, Capital —] 2010854 5% en"fl;‘izzb-):'.'Tooo-'t‘ fii& 235 Light—25 7,10 477, 6 at 77,700 a0 Washington Rwy. & Eleetric pfd.—10 at 1%, % 3?%'.'5".;‘6115." 01%.5 at 91%. 4 ArTER CALL. ederal-American Cor"eont 250 0 %5 10 gs N Bienogonn pe ot pon 3 ot gy apital Traction Co. at 1051 . g ashington Gas Gs ~B"—3$1.000 at 105. Denial that control of the Wheeling & Lake Erle Railroad through fnter- locking directorates of the New York Central, Nickel Plate and Baltimore & Ohio, would lessen competition among Eastern railroads, was made in a brief filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission today by the Baltimore & Ohio. The three major lines already own 51 per cent of the stock of the Wheeling & Lake Erle, and officers of the New York Central, the Balti- more & Ohio, and the Nickel Plate, have applied for authority to serve as_directors of the Wheeling. The Pittsburgh & Lake Erle and the Wabash opposed the applications an the ground that such a four-system operation would be destructive of com- petition, while the former has sought aut{llonty to acquire the Wheeling itself. 2 84 2100 99% et MEETING POSTPONED. Texas Spring | §tapd 0 WASHINGTO! SPECIALTIES AGAIN ADVANCE ON CURB Royal Baking Powder Fea- ture—Several New Highs Are Recorded. BY WILLIAM F. HEFFERNAN. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 1.—The now familiar process of bidding up one specialty after another gave the curb market a strong appearance again today. The improvement in the issues where the floating supply is small was pronounced in several in- stances and carried not a few to the highest prices under the present capitalizations. One of the outstanding incidents was the overnight jump of 20 points in Royal Baking Powder, following the 17-point rise yesterday. The in- centive here was the prospect of a recapitalization plan whereby share owners will benefit in ‘the form of a substantial stock distribution. Melville Shoe, at new high prices, was respond- ing to reports of highly favorable sales, while Celanez and Celluloid common shares went into new high ground, with buying based upon ex- pected benefits to be derived through the recent consolidation. A new high record also was estab- lished by Insurance Co. of North America, Singer Manufacturing equal- ed its previous hest of 400, Brillo Manufacturing issues reached new tops and Firestone Tire gained an- other 4 points to its highest at 167 before the demand subsided. Low-priced public utilities which were thought to be entitled to sell at higher prices in the present market were carried up, with the demand urgent. Large blocks of Lehigh Power ‘were taken close to the high for the year, and there was special strength in Consolidated Gas of Baltimore, Southeastern Power and United Gas & Improvement. Interest in the bond division cen- tered in newly listed issues of the type of Boston & Maine series “A” 6s and Kemseley Millbourn 6s. The former, crossing 94, sold at their best prices. The spectacular uprush in the latter issue overshadowed anything else that has happened in a new bond offering for its listing in many months. Offered for public subscription at 991, several days ago, the price was bid up yester- day to 114. The bonds were selling at close to 120 today. The explanation commonly given for the unusual rise was a growing realization of the value of the conversion privilege which the bonds carry. SUGAR ADVANCES. Renewal of Covering and Outside Buying in Futures Market NEW YORK, September 1 (#).—The raw sugar market was slightly more active today and prices advanced 1-32 of a cent to the basis of 4.77 for duty paid. Salcs included 28,000 bags of Cuban at 4.74 and 14,000 bags of Philippines at 4.77 late yesterday, and today about 14,000 bags of Philippines and 23,600 bags of Cuban at 4.77 for all September ship- ment. The steadier spot market and high- er London cables were responsible for a renewal of covering and outside buy- ing in raw sugar futures. Prices showed net gains of 4 to 6 points. Of- ferings increased on the upturn, how- ever, and partial reactions followed under realizing, with the market at midday 1 to 4 points net higher. Refined sugar was firmer, influenced by the higher cost of raws, with prices unchanged to 15 points higher, and ;Inc granulated quoted from 5.90 to .00, —_— W. L. ROSS RETIRES.
