Correspondence of the Associated Press. | MONTE CARLO.—A threat of fire some pistal shots and a sulclde re cently spoiled the studiously subdued | quiet of the great gambling room t has made Monte Carlo famous. Kostich Radomild, a Jugaslav, ap- parently angered over play on the roulette tables, suddenly poured a bot- tle of alcohol on the green-topped gam ing table and made as if to touch off the inflammable liquid with his ei lighter. The strong-armed, vigilant zuards, always hovering near, stopped him, hut the man drew a pistol and fired wildly about. His shots went wild, but he broke through the guards. jumped through the window, &dd died Soon afterwards Monte Carlo but seldom do has many tragedies, they become so spec- tacular. It is often said that every heavy loser is well watched, so that thera may be as few suicides as pos sible to dampen the spirits of the gambling crowd or to ruffle the digni of the place. Correspondence of the Associated Press. TOKIO.——Fascism in Japan is at- taining rapid growth and may one day be the final bulwark agair bolshevism in Asia, say leaders of the National Spirit Preservation Associa- tion, formal name of the Japanese Fascists. “Any avail nothing tional crisis,” amount of argument would at the time of a na- declared Tokuhiaa Fukuda, chairman of the hoard of directors of the Japanese Fascists’ organization. At the supreme mo- ment of national danger only the strong arm of a Mussolini can save the country. This is our platform. We believe in direct action, should it become necessary in the interests of the country.” The Japanese Fascists are said to number about a million, and the organization has 70 branches in all parts of the empire. At a recent meeting on National Defense day. the organization adopted a resolution in connection with the Geneva arma- ments conference to the effect that Japan should refuse to accept any proposition unless it was based on an equal footing for Japan, England and the United States. .. SEEK TO SAVE PINES. Michigan Plans Preserve to Pre- vent Timber Depletion. LANSING, Mich., August 22 (#).— Awakened to the fact that its famous | pine forests are almost depleted, Michigan has taken steps to prevent the complete destruction of its white and Norway pine timber. State foresters have found a natural stand of pine near the center of the State, covering 80 acres, and this tract with 8,000 acres surrounding it will be purchased and dedicated as a permanent forest preserve and game refuge. A few decades ago hundreds of thousands of Michigan acres were cov- ered with lofty pines. Vast stretches of former pine lands now produce nothing but huckleberries. The sofl has defied attempts at reforestation. Church Traded for Embassy.
