For the year to date the gross sales of these same comjiniek totaled $332,699,- 000, or a gain of 15 per cent over last ¥ These figures, Brookmire points out, seem to indicate that trade is only now beginning to feel the effects of ‘the curtailment in general busi- ness which hegan last March. Sales of the two leading mail order houses held up well in July, showing a gain of 3 per cent over last y against an increase of 3.3 per cent in June, and actus 1ses in the first two months of 1927. This increase is a reflection of the recent improvement in the purchasing position of the farmers. Ordinary Life Insurance Figures. By the Associated Press, NEW ORLEANS, Augnst 22— Great activity has featured the cot- | ton market during the past week, and | prices, after having dropped to 18.82 | for December at the close just a | v points from the high point of 20.5 eached on Tuesday, August 9, recor ed all the loss during the current week and established a new high rec- ord for the seasor as the week closed at 21.03, or 221 points, above the close of the preceding Saturday. The sharp upturn of the week was due mainly to alarm over the many reports of the spread and activity of the boll weevil. The initial improv ment came with reports of rapid de- terioration in Texas. from which State the reports had until quite re- cently been favorable. Later there were many reports of serious weevil damage in the southern half of the central and eastern portions of the belt. This fear of weevil activity | was added to by the daily siowers reported from the Eastern and Cen- tral belts. The final spurt to the market be- gan Friday, when it was announced that the Government would release another boll weevil report Saturday morning., and prices advanced prac- tically 70 points on that day. .
