(HICAGO, July 30.—Urged on by an announced purpose to keep Chi- cago from being “shamed before the entire Nation,” a group of influential citizes erday was standing back of Willlam McAndrew, superintendent of schools, prepared for a fight against ouster proceedings aimed at removing him before his term expires next Jan- uary. Hostilities were opened when McAn- drew and his backers challenged the action of J. Lewis Coath, president of the school board, in replacing em- ployes in the school offices with what they termed “inexperienced and less competent help.” McAndrew’s supporters rallied to his cause by raising money and re- taining two lawyers to carry his fight to the courts. By the Associated Press, A NEW YORK, July 30.—~The eotton market today was weak and unsettied, prices breaking about half a cent from yesterday's closing quotations. The decline was checked at 18.43 for December, and'there were raties later on -éovering and trade buying, that delivery closing at 18.53 compared with 19.95 at ‘the closing previous day and 19.39, the high record of last Tuésday. The general market closed steady at net declines of 40 to 44 points. . The market opened easy at a de- cline of 13 to 19 points under liquida- tion and selling for ‘a’ reaction. No special news factor was connected with the selling, but thé market acted as'if a considerable long interest had accumulated on recent advances and that a weaker technical position was asserting its influence. Stop orders were uncovered as prices worked off, and there was no slackening of the selling movement until active months showed net losses of about 50 to 54 points. October ‘sold off to 18.20 and January to 18.58, making declines of about 90 to 96 points from the high record prices established earlier in the week. There was trade buying and covering on scale-down orders which gradually absorbed the offerings, how- ever, and when the selling tapered off during the middle of the morning, prices steadied on covering. Rallies of 15 or 20 points from the.lowest followed, but they were not fully main- tained, as the bulges seemed to meet further commission or wire house liquidation. Last prices were about 6 to 10 points up from the lowest on most positions. - Buying on fhe de- cline may have been. encouraged by prospects for further showers’in the South, where dry weather is supposed to be generally needed, but except for the trade buying on a scale down dur- ing the earlier trading, the demand was attributed chiefly to covering. Owing to the holiday there were no cables from Liverpool to influence sentiment here one way or the other, and Liverpool will not reopen for busi- ness until Tuesday morning. The dis- position to even up commitments may have been promoted to some extent by uncertainty as to the showing of season-end statistics and the approach- ing Government reports on weevil emergence and end-July. orep pros- pects or a feeling that any bullish features likely to show in these re- ports had been pretty well discounted by the recent advance. Native and nearby garden truck in- creasing in receipt and most lines are easy, with prices ‘mostly in buyer' favor at the following quotations: Stringless green ‘heans, 1.25 to 1.50 bushel; heets, 1.50 to 3.00, 100; cab- bagey 4.00 to 7.00, 100; carrots, 2.00 to 4.00, 100; sugar corn, 40 and 50 dozen; field corn, 15 to 35 dozen; cucumbers, 40 to 60 basket; eggplants, 1.25 to 1.50 basket; onions, 75 to 1.00 bushel; pep- pers and squash, 50 to 75 basket; to- matoes, 1.00 to 1.50 basket for ripe and 50 to 60 basket for green; Eastern Shore, 6-basket crates, are bringing 1.00 to 1.50 for ripe and 75 to 1.00 for green, Want Grade Firsts. While receipts of native and nearby eggs have been running fair, much of the stock in the daily arrivals will not grade firsts and have to be sold as current receipts on which market values are based at this time of the year. Western eggs are claim- ing ‘more . attention, dealers- holding the quality is better thar nearby eggs which are showing corsiderable loss-off under the candle. The mar- ket closed today at 2315 cents a doz- en for native and nearby. current re- ceipts in free cases, while strictly fresh' eggs grading firsts will bring from 1 cent to 1% cents a dozen premium over these quotations. The general Hve poultry’ market continues easy under fairly liberal receipts of fowl of all kinds. Early June apples are bringing 1.25 to 2.25 per bushel to five-peck basket, while cantaloupes sell mostly 1.25 to 2.00 ‘per-1-quart baskets; Eastern Shore blackberries active at 12 to 16 quart,-while huckle- berries bring 15 to 20 quart; peéaches in good demand at 75 to 1.25 basket, while plums are also’active at 50 to 75 basket.
