MASTBAUM .| DIES AT AGE OF o Head of Movie Firm, Once Poor Boy, Succumbs After Accumulating Millions. By the Associated Press. PHILADELPHIA, December 8— The career of Jules E. Mastbaum, president of the Stanley Company of America, ended suddenly by death, was a striking example of a boy in humble circumstances attaining wealth in the movies. From delivery wagon driver in a small Western town at $10 a week he rose to be head of one of the largest motion picture exhibiting companies in the country, and was rated as a multi-millionaire. He died yesterday at 54, four days after an emergency operation for an intestinal obstruction. Thirty years ago, after being grad~ uated from high school here, Mast- baum went to Danville, Ill, where he was engaged to drive a delivery wagon for Gimbel Brothers' depart- ment store. In quick succession he was promioted to responsible positions in the concern’s Milwaukee store, and in 1899 e to Philadelphia as the firm’s bufer. With his brother, the late Stanley V. Mastbaum, he entered the motion picture business in a small way, grad ually expanding until the Stanley Company today controls 235 motion picture and vaudeville houses in Penn- sylvania, New York, New Jersey, Del- aware, Maryland and the District of Columbia. He had given large sums to charity, both Jewish and Gentile. He went abroad frequently, and the cables of one of his trips in 1925 told of his winning $11,000 at the Riviera gaming tables, some of it in spectacu- lar play with the Prince of Wales. FOUND.
