23 _— EXPLRERAKELE CALLD BY DEAT Dies of Nervous Breakdown November 17 in Belgian Congo. By the Assoctatad Press. ROCHESTER, N. Y., December 1.— News of the death in the Belglan Congo of Carl Akeley, explorer, on November 17, came across the world rday to the little town of Claren- , near Holley, Orleans County, wvhere he was born, and to former companione in this city. Dr. Audley D. Stewart, who with (George Eastman, millionaire camera 'hanufacturer, accompanied Mr. Ake- iy on a recent hunting expedition in British East Africa, recalled that the explorer had suffered a nervous breakdown several months ago and, on his advice, had entered a nursing home at Nairob for a complete rest. He added that when the party sailed for home in October Mr. Akeley ap- peared to be In better health. Blow to American Museum. The father died while the explorer was a youth and the msther then moved to Chicago . to join another son, Lewis, who was connected with the Chicago school system. He was kindly received by the proprietor, the late Prof. Henry A. Ward, and eventually was permit- ted to try out his own jdea of a new taxidermy, mounting asmals so as to present them in their natural setting.
