The shot was fired while she was telephoning to Mrs. Anna Smith, 1418 Eighth street, to let her know what she was about to do. Mrs. Smith asked the minister's wife to stpone the shooting until she ooulfflnun the house and talk to her, but Mrs. Brooks fired the shot that snuffed out her life almost instantly. She was practically dead when her husband, attracted to the room by the report of the shot, found her body resting on a bed, the pistol having dropped to the floor. Dr. Stmeon L. Carson examined the body and pronounced life extinct. Mrs. | Hi Brooks, former resident of Detroit, ich., had been a sufferer from bron- and had recently appeared de- d. She had made no mention an intention to end her life, how- ever, and husband and friends were greatly shocked when informed of her sufcide. 2 Rev. Detective Edward J. Kelly, who has served as head of the squad the past few years. has been selected by Inspector Henry G. Pratt, chief of detectives, to per- form duty this year, Ariangements have been made to organize the squad the latter part of this week and have its members on duty In and about the crowded stores beginning Monday morning and end- ing at closing time the night of De- cember 24.
