CITY, November 4.— Cities that “might have been” and on which high tax rates were levied after heavy bond issues had been voted are frequent in Oklahoma history. Devall and Pershing. both small oil towns in Oklahoma, were given as ex amples by Randell Cobb, assistant at torney general in charge of the State bond department. Six vears ago. oil w. the surface in the vicinity of the lit- tle village of Pershing. Visualizing a large city in the future the ambi. tlous citizens voted a $140,000 bond is- s brought to sue for the purpose of building a water works system. Oil production dwindled and the cit population decreased. The town is now indebted for nearly half jts valuation. ~Most of the bonds, which were sold, are being held by municipal sinking funds. The story of Pershing was repeated at Devall. When il was found, a boom" occurred and citizens voted large amounts for municipal improve- ments. Then the population de- creased and taxes bounded to exces- sive rates. A number of Devall citi | zens moved their homes outside the city limits to avoid paying the levy. Court Restrains Tailor. By the Associated Press. MANVILLE, Wyo., November 4.— An anclent civilization, which ante- dated and was further advanced than that of the American Indian, is claim- ing the scrutiny of archeologists in the “Spanish diggings,” eight miles south of here. Excavations have revealed traces of inhabitants, who, scientists belleve, were blotted out of existence by some cataclysm: of nature. Specimens of weapons and tools, made of jasper and agate, have been discoveéred, strewn in profusion about tepee circles, in which the “lost race" housed {tself. Unlike the usual In- dian relics finds, the agricultural tool and cooking utensils predominate over the weapons of battle and chase. ‘Wellingborough Golf Club links of England have been placed in quaran- tine following the outbreak of the hoof-and-mouth disease on an adjoin- From New York Dec. 2 Sail on S.
