CANNIBALS ATTAC DYAKS IN JUNGLE Bows and Arrows Weapons Used on American-Dutch Expedition. Br the Associated Press. BATAVIA, October 27.—A band of 200 Papuan cannibals, armed with bows and arrows, made an attack on « transport party of Dyaks belonging 10 the American-Dutch expedition in the New Guinea jungle country. ‘While the Dyaks were obliged to re- iurn to the base, it appears from the neager advices received here yester- day that there were ' no casualties. Later the party made another start without molestation. The American-Dutch expedition is leaded by Prof. Matthew W. ling,’ anthropologist of the University of California, and Dr. Van Leeu: Dutch scientist. Prof. Stirling and his party left San Francisco for New Guinea last November. Among the Papuans, natives of New Guinea, cannibalism 1s general, and every expedition that goes into the jungles to learn the secrets of the interior is accompanied by strong military guards. The typleal Papuan is usually tuller than the European. He goes sbout naked, and derives his name, Papuan, from the characteristic dressing of his hair, the name mean- iug_“frizzled” or “woolly-haired.” His weapons are the bow and urrow, a beheading knife, a stone ¢lub and spear. The varlous tribes Yive in a state of savagery, and are xntagonistic to explorers. One expe- ditlon was attacked twice along the cataracts of the Mamberano River. ©ne of the Dyak rowers was struck in ihe heart by a poisoned arrow and instantly Killed. A curious rule in New Guinea prescribes that the Tapuan who kills a human shall not partake of the feast. e METROPOLITAN CLUB OPPOSES DANCE HALL Music Declared to Disturb Rest of Members—Decision Is Withheld. Objection to the issuance of a li- ©ense for a public dance hall to Fridt- jof Johannesen, proprietor of the ierre Night Club, at 1714 H street, ‘was made by officials and members of the fashionable Metropolitan Club at £ public hearing conducted by Wade J1. Coombs, superintendent of license, mt the District Building yesterday miternoon. The Metropolitan Club representa- tives testified that music from the tight club, which continued as late as 2 a.m., disturbed the rest of its mem- fers who occupied the club annex, und they have threatened to give up thelr rooms if it continues. A petition signed by residents of the block complaining about music also was filed with Mr. Coombs. Mr. Johannesen claimed that danc- Ing was not started at the club until BSeptember 24, that “soft, snappy snusic” was provided and that the windows of the club were kept Closed‘ to avold creating an annoyance. As the complaint dated back sev- eral months before the dancing t- ed, Coombs withheld action on the ap- lication for a license until November to determine whether the objection had ben removed. Metropolitan offici: Avho testified were C {erbert J. Slo- «um, retired; D. G. anks, manager of the club, and W\ uu(lburw Blair, pres- fdent. and members Mrs. Williara Wolff Smith, presi- dent of the League of American Pen- women, which has its headquarters ®t 1709 H street, opposite the night club, testified in behalf of the proprie- tor, declaring the music caused no dis- furbance among the club members. 82 FOUNTAINS lNSfALLED. o stationary bubbling foun- e been i led in the corri- of the big granite building ng the State and War Depart- s for the henefit of thirsty em- and visitors, They take the yinve of the customary w: coolers #nd pitchers, heretofore used in every koo stem the dnnkln;: suater s cooled in the ice plant in the basement and pumped to every part ©f the bullding. The Government’s pet bears in Yosemite- National Park are bur- glarizing so many road cabins and ranger camps that the Interior De- partment is in a quandary how to stop their depredations without harming them. Tear gas has been tried inef- fectively, but apparently the bears ‘have no tear glands. The Chem- ical Warfare Service experiment- ed on a small black bear in the Zoo here, but even a heavy con- centration caused not a blink. During the tourist season the bears are well fed and become lazy and fat and averse to searching afield for food.
