The motion picture house on Con- necticut avenue near Chevy Chase Circle had a real rival last night when the handsome new home of the Chevy Chase Savings Bank was thrown open to the public for the first time. Throngs of people visited the bullding and carefully inspected every one of its many interesting details. Almost every resident of Chevy Chase must have been there and many of leading bankers also dropped in to extend congratulations. So many of the bankers sent flowers that the lobby looked far more like a hothouse than a bank, and orchestral music added much to the gavety of the occasion. After the guests had been welcomed and shown over the bank they were presented with fine leather billfolds, the _attractive souvenirs being styles suitable for both men and women. The vault space is ample, the cages most con- veniently arranged, the offices of the president and cashler are close to the entrance, the directors’ room on the mezzanine floor is especially attractive and the heating plant, with both di- rect and indirect heating, has been made a special feature. The hot-air system is so arranged that it can be used as a cooling system in the Sum- mer. The lighting and ventilation tems also are excellent and the loca- tion at Connecticut avenue and Mor- rison street is in a section that is showing remarkable growth. The bullding and site cost $140,000. Business in the old bank was con- cluded at noon today. The moving is to be sufficlently completed this after- noon in time for the usual Saturday evening business. Southern Seeks Stock Issue. The Southern Raflway sought Inter- state Commerce Commission permis- sion today for the sale of 100,000 shares of new common stock to its present stockholders, by which meth- od $10,000,000 will be obtained for fu-j ture investments in additions and betterments to the system. The com- pany proposes to increase the size of | the stock equity in its railroad as com- pared with bonded indebtedness, it has announced, and will follow up the present application with others to al- low a total sale of 300,000 shares of new common stock. Present stockholders of the South- ern will be given the right to sub- scribe to one share of the new stock at par in proportion to each 18 shares of old stock, which they now hold. They will be allowed to pay for the new stock in installments spread out over a year and the par value whizh they will pay is considerably beiow the prevalling market value for the old stock. In 1925-26 cash income the farmers derived from their cotton crop was approximately $1,750,000,000, accord- ing to_the Brookmire Economic Serv- ice. This year, even before the re- cent break in cotton prices, the esti- mated cash income was set at $1,450,- 000,000 and developments of the past month have subtracted something like $200,000,000 more from this figure, making a total falling off of some $500,000,000. . The Lanston Monotype Machine Co. has declared the regular quarterly dividend of 1% per cent, payable on November 30 to stock of record No- vember 20. The Piggly Wiggly Western States Co. has declared the quarterly divi- dend of 373 cents per share on class A stock, payable on November 1. FARM LEGISLATION FOR SOUTH IS URGED Southern Cotton Planter Suggests Laws Be Enacted in Line With Holding Policy. By the Associated Press. A suggestion that the present cot- ton holding movement in the South be combined with a program for agriculture relief legislation early in the next Congress, has been here by Walton Peteet, representative of Southern and Western farm forces. Defeat of farm legislation in the last Congress, he said, had been charged to Southern Senators and Representatives, who joined with the East to defeat legislation, which would have prevented the present situation, « “If the McNary bill had been passed would now be in existence a Federal farm board with $75,000,000 to take distress cotton off the market and jcarry it over until there is need for it at prices that would yield a profit to the grower.” A similar bill will be introduced when Congress convenes, he said, and if the South will join hands with the West, it can be passed without delay.
