Accomplishments of the Harding and Coolidge administrations in han- dling the Nation’s financial problems and in tax reductions were reviewed at length by Senator Fess in his key- note speech, declaring these accom- plishments to be the most brilltant in the history of the world. Calling at- tention to reductfon of the national debt from $26,500,000,000 to $19.500,- 060,000 in five years of Republican regime, he declared the entire debt would be wiped out within 30 years “If * Republican policles are not in- terrupted by Democratic trifling.” At the Democratic convention Gov. Vie Donahey asserted the last two Re- publican General Assemblies had cir- cumvented his attempts to change the personnel of the State Public Utilities Commission, thus substantiating the general charge of the party that lobby- ists of ‘“powerful interests” have wielded influence in the affairs of State government, = Atlee Pomerene, former United States Senater and a candidate again, took occasions to answer his critics on two points—his stand on labor ques- tions and his position regarding the eighteenth amendment. He continued: “I have said repeatedly if T were a workingman, in the sense that I worked with my hands, T would be a union man. T always have favored col- lective bargaining.
