Prohibition Is Dodged. Both parties apparently are to fight | shy of the proiibition question dur-| ing the campaign. The Democrats declared for enforcement of the pro- hibition laws and the Republican platform committee has recommend- ed a similar ‘stand. American prosperity by insuring | continuance of Republican policies” | the Republicans opened their con- vention yesterday. This keynote sounded by United States Senator Simeon D. Fess was | echoed by Senator Frank B. Willls, | who is seeking re-election, and also | by Myers Y. Cooper, the gubernatorial nominee. Prior to the opening of the convention the State central commit- | tee began laying plang for conduct | of the campalgn. It resolved itself | into an executive committee to which is to be added one woman member from each of the 22 congressional dis- tricts, ‘A campalgn committee to be chosen later will have direct manage- ment of the campaign. Accomplishments of the Harding and Coolidge administrations in han- dling the Nation’s financial problems and in tax reductions were reviewed at length by Senator Fess in his key- note speech, declaring these accom- plishments to be the most brilltant in the history of the world. Calling at- tention to reductfon of the national debt from $26,500,000,000 to $19.500,- 060,000 in five years of Republican regime, he declared the entire debt would be wiped out within 30 years “If * Republican policles are not in- terrupted by Democratic trifling.” At the Democratic convention Gov. Vie Donahey asserted the last two Re- publican General Assemblies had cir- cumvented his attempts to change the personnel of the State Public Utilities Commission, thus substantiating the general charge of the party that lobby- ists of ‘“powerful interests” have wielded influence in the affairs of State government, = Atlee Pomerene, former United States Senater and a candidate again, took occasions to answer his critics on two points—his stand on labor ques- tions and his position regarding the eighteenth amendment. He promised he would make every attempt, if elected, to re-establish the corrupt practice act as applicable to the primary. “If T had to buy my nomination, be- lieve me. T wouldn't take it,” he sald. He continued: “I have said repeatedly if T were a workingman, in the sense that I worked with my hands, T would be a union man. T always have favored col- lective bargaining. I want to see the American workingman the best fed and the best housed in the world. “Law enforcement, with me not a political belief. but a religion.
