Various means have been tried to re duce the distributed capacity of ¢ Unfortunately, some methods used to reduce the distributed capacity of a coil have resulted in reduced rather than increased efliciency because of the losses which such construction in troduced. One of these methods is that of space-winding the coil so that | the increased spacing between adjacent turns decreases the total dis- | | IMiciency — iency a in tributed ¢ ty of the coll. The increased resistance of such a coil for a given required inductance makes the advantage to be gained by | reduced_distributed capacity of little value. The increased spacing reduces the inductance, therefore requiring greater number of turns, with conse- ease in resistance and si: As far as actual coil efficiency is concerned, all tests seem to indicete that the ideal coil is a single layer eoil of the solenoid type, wound so that it req pporting ma. terial such as @ bakelite or hard rub- ber tube. Standards, this type of cofl was found to be closest in point of coll eficiency | to the singlelayer, solenoid coil. A commercial type of this coil is shown in the filustration. The coil is practically a_single-laver coil, with displaced so that jacent turns criss-cross back and forth. A binder is placed at the inter- sections to hold the turns together. This binder touches the turns for a very short distance and does not pro- duce the harmful effects met with in Is where the binder is spread on every bit of the wire. The slight sta gering of the turns reduces the di tributed capacity without greatly re- ducing the inductances. so that the length of wire and consequently the resistance of a coil of this type is only very slightly more than the ideal single-layer type. It also makes for a stronger coil. Very little mounting material is re- quired, and this further cuts losses which would otherwise result | from using a tube or other supporting | material. The m: the closeness with which it approach- es the single-layer solenoid form and the relative absence of metal or insu- self-supporting lating material in the field of the coil. | Radio Chain to Be Extended.
