Fairways, a tooth bitten deep in his lower lip till the beads of blood stood out upon it, had said no word. But the fingers of his sinewy hands had clenched deep into his palms until the knuckles showed chalk white above them As they sat at dinner that night in the little leaf-covered shelter that | served them as a veranda not one word passed between them. | Al the following morning she wondered if he would keep the en- gagement they had made with their neighbors across the valley! She was rather pleasantly surprised when his voice came outside her tent an hour before midday “If you are ready will start.” She paced silently beside him down the hill | The impressionable Anders. whose night dreams had been haunted by a pair of dark eves set in an alluringly tanned face (allowances must be made | with regard to the fact that Richenda was the only woman in his immediate | neighborhood), found her still more at tractive in the fresh primrose colored frock. down the front of which swayed a string of jade beads. Fairways took his share in the conversation and made himself distinctly more companionable than he had done the previous evening. To Richenda he addressed exactly enough direct emarks to ptevent their hosts realizing that between these two a wide abyss yawned. On her part. however, she took but few pains to hide facts She would not shield this man who had placed her in such a heipless position. Let the onlookers think just what they liked, she did not care, she told herself. She followed the lead she saw in Anders’ eyes. her smile meeting his, her quick retorts capping his every remark. After the meal was finished they drew their chairs further into the | shade of the forest and conversation grew a little slower as the drowsy hum of afternoon fell across the heat- hazed countrvside. A chattering from the leafy heights above drew sllence upon their lips. he said, “we a | advantage the shrill shriek of a grotesque baby | astride its mother's back, clutching | her hairy neck frantically in its ef- forts to remain on its precarious | seat, and the troop of monkeys halted | in an uncertain, much conversing i group within a few vards of the three | humans. “What pretty Richenda to And one for a pet. “I think we can manage that,” he said, rising quietly from his seat. “Ati any rate, we'll do our best.” | At _his movement the troop scam-| pered back a few s with a simian | exclamation of alarm. Anders, taking | the sudden confusion, made his way to the tent, reappear- ing a few moments later with a bunch of bananas and an empty narrow- necked pickle bottle in his hands. “Now.” he said, “watch your Uncle Reginald and he'll show how they do_things in South India. The monkeys, greedy eyed, had drawn nearer in an excited group at the sight of the coveted golden fruit. Anders placed half a thick banana in- side the bottle and, nearer the mouth, some small pieces. To the neck he tied a long string. Then carefully he placed the trap at the foot of the trees which held the gesticulating tribe. Came a clamor of monkey talk, tentative dashes of approach from the bolder spirits toward the coveted food so near at hand, shrill yells of warning from more timid animals in the topmost branches. At length a leader of his fellows stole near enough to snatch a morsel from the mouth of the bottle, scuftering immediately back to his leafy ambush with the delicacy pouched in a bulging cheek. Another and another emulated his ad- vantage till at last only the largest portion was left inside the bottle, and gingerly inserting his hand, one small, trembling creature closed his greedy fingers round this piece. Upon him descended Anders with the blanket that a walting native held out to him.
