NEW YORK, July 31.—Resumption of the upward movement of prices characterized the closing session of the month in the stock market. Heavy week, end profit-taking, coupled with sporadic shprt selling, brogght about net recessions of a poin® or two in more than a score of issues, including United States Steel dommon, but of- ferings generally were well absorbed, and eclosing quotations disclosed a long list of net gains ranging from one to nearly seven points. Trading was in heavy volume for a half holi- day sestlon, the day's sales aggregat- ing 894,000 shares, Speculators for the advance, flushed with their success of the past week, - conducted aggressive buying demonstrations in the motor, public utllity, railroad and steel groups, picking out new leaders in each. The principal trade developments of the day were reports of stiffening whole- sale gasoline prices in Chicago and expanding steel mill operations in the Youngstown district. General Motors quieted down some- what after its recent sensational ad- vance, closing 14 points higher at {18915 after fluctuating between 18813 and 190%. Total sales of this issue approximated 36,500 shares. as against a daily average of over 200,000 in the fivst five days of the week. NEW YORK, July 31 (®).—Wa!l Street heard today that the Tidewater Associated Ofl Syndicate, which un- derwrote 1,800,000 shares of common stoek last March, will be extended from August 4 to September 20. An extension was requested because the managers have had under considera. tion certain negotiations which have not yet been terminated. While no statement has been made as to the nature of these negotiations, rumors have been current that the common stock, which has never been offered to the public, may be taken over by another ofl company. All the $46,- 000,000 6 per cent preferred stock is reported to have been disposed of. BANK CLEARINGS DROP. NEW YORK, July 81 (#).—Bank clearings for the past week, accord- ing to figures compiled by the Com mercial and Financlal Chronicle from leading cities of the country, totaled $8,711,372,467, a decrease of 3.9 per cent compared with the same period last year. Clearings in New York City declined 3.4 per cent. IN'STEEL INDUSTRY Copper - Shows Hardening Tendency, With Large Sales at 14 3-8 Cents. By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, J‘ly 31 (#).—Slight declines in production end shipments and some increase in new business were reported by 354 of the larger soft wood lumber mills of the country for the week ended July 24, the Na- tional Lumber Manufacturers’ Asso clation announces. the same week last vear, there was a gain in all three factors, especlally current orders. TIMKEN'S PROFITS. . 4 NEW YORK, Ju'y 31 ()—Net| profits of $4,003490, after charges | and taxes, were reported by the 7Tim- ken Roller Bearing Co. for the first helf of the year. The earnings were equivalent to $4.08 a share on the out- standing stock. For the same perfod iast year profits amounted to $3.- 983,243, equal to $3.31 a share. will show a slight gain. Prices re- mained about unchanged, although in some quarters slight concessions were reported.. New business in pig iron was small but shipments on old sales were liberal and prices steady. Copper showed a hardening tend- { ency, with large sales at 14% cents for electrolytic delivered, which practl- cally cleared up all the metal available at that figure, so that most of the larger producers were holding firmly at 1414 cents at the end of the week. Some sales were reported, in fact. & shade under that level, but the price was not generally established. The demand continues excellent. Tin advanced further. but kept be- low , an import parity.
