Correspondence between school chil- dren of the United States and those of other countries which is carried on on a large scale in some schools is said to be a great agency for promoting international amity.' The letters go to practically évery country of ‘impor- tance in the world. The correspond- ence is ai between the teach- ers in the various.countries, but is done by the children, and many long- distance friendships have resulted. Pio Tin Solved Light Problem. Nearly 50 years ago, when David lasco was trying to. achi unique and startling lighting effects on ‘the stoge he discovered one means of eliminating shadows on the stage by picking up-an ordinary tin ple plate, “| bending it in the middle in such a that when {t caught a ray of light from one of the lamps it deflected it in just the proper manner. He now uses well made metal reflectors fash- toned after the original crude one. of SCME'S —AtKann’s! tem of stars to which the sun belongs. Tt does not include any motion which the system of stars may have as a whole. There are many who belleve that our system of stars constitute a spiral nebula. 'The spiral nebulae are found to be moving with great veloc- itles with respect to us, and it may later be possible to determine the velocity of our star system with re- spect to the surrounding systems, but It cannot be done satisfactorily at ptesent. Followers of Einstein be- lieve that we will forever be unable to state our motion in any other way than this; that is, relatively. Einstein's Theory Contradicted. Experiments haye been made re- cently on Mount Wilson by Prof. Day- ton Miller to determine, if possible, the velocity of the earth with respect to the ether of space. His results show that the sun and planets are meving toward the point in Draco marked H with a velocity of at least 125 miles a second. This may be called an absolute motion. These re. sults contradict Einstein's theory of relativity, as does other evidence, léaving us still in doubt as to its trath or falsity. We must awalt fur- ther evidence or explanation ef the contradictions in the evidence now existing. Ophiuchus and Serpens. The large constellation Ophluchus and the long ¢tonstellation Serpens aré now at their best in the south. The name Ophiuchus means serpent- holder. These constellations are in- separably connected. As may be seen from an inspection of the mythologic- al figures shown in Fig. 2, the man, Ophiuchus, holds the serpent (Serpens) in his hands. The constellation Ser- pens is divided into'two distinct parts, one to the east and one to the west of Ophiuchus. They are distinguished sometimes as Serpens Caput and Ser- pehs Cauda; that is, head and tail. Serpens 1is the only constellation which has two distinct parts. The serpent, as may be seen, crosses the body of Ophiuchus, but each star must be considered as belonging either to Ophiuchus or Serpens. : ‘The two stars in the right hand of | Ophiuchus belong in that constella- Figure 1.
