* () Landscape Planning *<" For the Home Owner BY ROSE GREELY, Landscape Architect. The Spring garden is never a prob- 18m. From early April until late May there-is a riot of color, but with the coming of Midsummer there is al- ways-a lull. The roses are passing. The delphiniums have finished their first bloom and have been cut back for the blossoming in September, and the phiox has not yet come except for a few early varleties, After the luxur- fance of Spring the en seems sud- denly empty. If it is to be enjoyed only in the Spring, one can concen- trate 6n the early flowers, and allow the: Midsurmer Iull. But if the fam- ily_is to be at home during the Sum- meT, they will want to have an all- round garden. In such a garden, of Midsummer should have attention. two ways of providing bloom in the garden; by introducing annuals to at ‘this time of the year, or by out the Summer blooming s, and seeing that they are wded out by the more effec- ring flowers. If the garden can have a great deal of attention, the first method is excellent, but if it is & “home product” the annuals will take an inordinate amount of time. An all.perennial garden will be so much less trouble in the end that it will be worth making an effort for in the boeginning. In considering Sum- me# bloom; therefore, we will think nly in terms of perennial flowers. Hollyhocks and yuccas are the two Midsummer flowers that come most casily to mind. Both for their very commonness are somewhat despised in many modern gardens, but with lit- tla reason, since both, correctly used, are among the most effective flowers. Any one who has seen in Midsummer dens of the University en hollyhocks and viecas used, singly and in combina- nst a background of green and high brick walls. Thelr large flowers, which some- times seem out of scale with smaller blossoms in the flower garden, are just right in such a setting. The ef- fect is undoubtedly accidental, due to the fact that both flowers are so hardy that they alone remain out of what were probably at one time more claborate gardens; but it is none the less ‘good, and as such, worthy of note, Hollvhocks are easier than yucea to use in the general flower though they are best used t of all against a effective also ially if they e placed in the nce. Yuccas wst either be St one or with other large-scale flowers, or they must be featured as an architectural ele- ment of the garden. Like cedars, yueeas have a distinct architectural value, and are effective when they are used to accent an architectural ele- fuent of the garden, such as a seat or & tountain. s Yellow and orange are favorite Mid- summer colors, with a range from the pale yellow of the Summer lemon lily (Hemerocalis thunbergl) to the vivid either bloom Hol-~Hollyhocks. The butterfly lily, (Asclepias tuberosa) of striking assed but not harsh orange, can be m: to make delightful splashes of color. Coreopsis and gaillardia furnish good combinations of yellow and red, and the yellow foxglove (Digitalis ambigua) with the soft yellow flowers of typi- cal foxglove lilies grows without much attention. As a contrast to so much vellow, blue funkia (Hosta caerulea) with blue—lavender flowers for the shade, and English lavender (Lavandula vera) for the sun, make equally good clumps. The gray-green follage and sweet scented flowers of the lavender are an added attraction. N6 July garden is complete without the veronicas, in tall spikes of lav- ender blue. The blues in the garden may be augmented by the blue: Sum- mer sage (Salvia argentea) delightful and old fashioned rather than showy, and by scablosa_caucasica, .the pin- cushion flower which comes in blues as well as in pinks and violets. For a pink that is almost scarlet, but with- out the harsh note that often makes scarlet hard to use with other flow- ers, use the penstemon (Penstemon barbatus torreyi). Mid-Summer is essentlally a time of feathery white flowers. Japanese spires.
