" 82 RN BOATSFGHT INFEUD ONLANE Big Combine Uses Safe| Routes, Smaller Dealers Fol- | low, Resulting in Battle. By the Associated Press. SANDWICH, Ontario, July 29.—Po. lice today were searching for partici- pants in a pitched gun battle between occupants of two liquor-running power boats off the Canadian shore near here, the result, they said, of one of the | most unusual rum feuds yet to come to_their attention. The feud, which had been under in- vestigation here and at Windsor for B 1 weeks, developed over the ac tivities of one faction in appropriating liquor-running lanes of the other on the Detroit River. The lanes for crossing are laid out by one large liquor combine on infor- mation it obtains from its own sourc regarding the movements of the bo der patrols on the United States side, | according to the police. Alien runners, according to informa tlon to the police, have learned the schedules for crossing of the larger| faction and, taking advantage of the protection afforded, follow the boats of | the latter across, landing their cargo | with little comparative risk. Objection_from the larger group re sulted in a half dozen minor fights, of- ficials said, and culminated in the bat- tle off hera early today. Approximate- Iy 50 shots were exchanged between | crews of the two boats, police learned. | One boat was run ashore near here and the occupants fled in a walting automobile. The other rum-runner proceded to the American shore. PROPHET OF .I\CTUAL FIRE BOUND FOR GRAND JURY Colored Man Denied Arson Charge, and Spontaneous Combustion Was Called Possible. . Millard Stewart, colored, who said | that a fire might break out in grocery store of Sam Antwarg, N street, and who was arrested when f blaze did start there a few minutes v was bound over for grand jury when ar- vaigned before Judge McMahon in United States br: of Police Court. Stewart and Antwarg had an argu ment as to whether the former should receive $1.75 or $2 for removing trash from the store premises. Beaten in the arzument, the colored man is said to have predicted that the storekeeper | oon have a fire to fight. The doing several hundred e. Stewart denied the arson charge. No one saw him set fire to the place. M. Gould, No. 5 Engine ~ompany. testified it was possible the fire may have been caused by spon-{ taneous combustion. Judge McMahon, | however, held Stewart for grand jury investigation. ke T l Impossxbxllnes 1 = * T used to say. “It can’t be done when seers predicted wondrous things, | that men would soar toward the sun, and beat the birds on man-made wings: that messages to distant shires through the ether wires, reach their lightning haste: that men would ride in horseless wains. propelled by a re sistless power, and scorch along the sunlit plains at 57 miles an hour. I gaw a hundred triumphs won, the king out of projects bold, and still I said, “It cant be done.” when some- thing wondrous was foretold. The years rolled on as years will roll, since tour-wheel brakes are not applied, and doubt began to tease my soul; in nega tives I took no pride. Inventors pulled | &0 many tricks that 1 had said could | not be done I felt ashamed to mur-! when seers foretold an- .’ And now I do not mutter | no matter what the prophets ne gleans some wisdom by the less his mind is halt and lame. as told that men would ips round the Northern Pole, T did not show a sign of doubt | or spring foreboding rigmarole. would have s=aid, “It can't be done,” | in other days. ere I grew wise: but now I sai wish them fun—I feel quite sure they'll gain the prize.” And if you say that people soon will leave | the earth in patent cars and make a Journey to the moon, or subdivide the nlanet Mars, I answer, “It will come to pass before we have much older | grown; men soon will step upon the ®as and visit spheres as yet un. known.
