BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HILE Summer resorts the country over are enjoying the presence of the ‘great and near great that make of Washington an ideal Winter Capital so far as society is concerned, one need not walk far afield or take more than a casual drive to meet notables still lingering in the city. However, all but three members of the President’s cabinet have followed his precedent and left the city for a longer or shorter time, the Secretary of State, Mr. Kellogg,«the Secretary of the Treasurey, Mellon, and the Secretary of Commerce, Mr. Hoover, all lingering here to care for the troublesome problems of. their respective bureaus. D WHILE Mr. Mellon's communion with nature ‘must be held from the windows of his automobile, for he lives in an apartment house, both Secretary Kellogg and Secretary Hoover are charmingly surrounded. The home of the Undersecretary of State and Mrs. Grew, now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Kellogg, like the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hoover, shows the care- ful hand of a gardener and they have forest trees about them to soften the miseries of a throbbing hot thermometer. & THE White House stands in a_maze of scaffolds as master-workmen: refurbish it to correspond with its name, and while thousands of tourists walk through the ground floor corridors and penetrate as far as the East Room, this part of the imansion must soon be closed to ac- commodate workmen. Soon there will only ‘be left peeps through the high iron fence into the beautiful” grounds, except for the President’s north front yard, which serves as a grand highway for clerks and others going to and from the State, War and Navy Department. Once in a while a group of schoolgirls in gay frocks and hats stop to watch the .great drove of black birds and robins on the lawn or a young person flaunts a red umbrella along the walk, but they no'lenger tarry before the mansion and gaze enraptured at an upstairs window in hopes of catching a glimpse of the President and First Lady of the Land. WHILE the Summer social register shows inland resorts to lead in popularity over seaside places, still there are more yachts in com- mission this year than is usual. It is difficult to determine just how much of this side of life ‘belongs to Washington, for but few of the owners of such craft ever bring them into the Potomac. Senator and Mrs. William M. Butler had their schooner yacht Michaho here for a short time and Senator and Mrs. Metcalf had their yacht here for some time before Congress closed, but for the most the many. seagoing vessels accredited to Washington rethain in water to the east and north of us. UBURBAN homes about the Capital are increasing in popularity, and now Mr. Coleman Jennings, who lives with his' mother, Mrs. Hennen leqmmgs. at her-residence on Massachusetts avenue during the ‘Winter, as bought a historic place in Virginia called the Towers, so named from its lofty lookout. which commands a view for miles up and down the Potomac River. To be certain that he would like his Virginia estate, Mr. Jennings leased it for several years before buying.
