i 16 REAL BUS LINES RADIATE TO VARIOUS POINTS FROM CAPITAL CITY (Continued from Thirteenth Page.) Already in the highlands, from that olnt he can secure rapid connection with a bus climbing the mountains which enshroud Cumberland. Bach Washington bus terminal has vharacteristics which stamp it as a Unfon Station on a smaller scale, with travelers awaiting incoming coaches, iuggage placed here and there and the same attitude of subdued bustle and rxcitement among attendants, parting wuests and well-wishing hosts and host- wosses. Upon the arrival of the huge, well proportioned monarch of the high- ways, immediate preparations made for another trip. Baggage placed aboard in speclally built com- partments or made fast upon a top varefully equipped for the purpose, and passengers settle themselves fora swift, clean and vibrationless journey over roads flanked by growing fields, deep, shaded woods and languid Iages steeped in the lore and the tra- dition of the countryside. Smonod bus travelers make the pofa$ that the modern motor coach, bestdes furnishing rapid, sure and safe transportation, also enables those who to_get close to the region through which they are traveling, to absorb the peculiar atmosphere of the territory, to observe unique habits and customs—and, a very joy to the city person, to breathe the fragrance of the wild rose and honeysuckle en route. ashington bus lines afford the rapidity, the pleasure, the comfort and the safety herin indicated, and each month brings further extension of each one of these varied and signifi- cant phases. Alexandria Lines Cited. Alexandria, Va., second oldest town in the United States, rich in tradition and having a history which dates back into shadowy centuries, and today a thriving and prosperous community, now is connected with the Capital by 1wo representative bus systems, run by the Alexandria, Barcroft and Washington line. Some idea of the type of service now being rendered by gusoline-powered public conveyances everywhere may be gained from the fact that busses ply betwéen Wash- ington and the Virginia town 116 times a day, and that there is no ces- sation of®service at any time of the day or night. A bare 30 minutes are consumed in making a one-way trip. The all-night service maintained by the bus lines to Alexandria indicates that the spirit of progress, of which the motor coach itself is such an out- standing example, is being carried out 10 the last detail by those within this great indust nd that no stone is being left unturned to make the bus of the greatest possible benefit to its ever-growing clientele. As a result of the motor coach the people of Alexan- dria and the people of Washington never are without a common means of transportation; the two centers never are isolated, no matter what hour the hands of the clock may show. ‘While this survey does not contem- plate purely local bus lines, sight. seeing vehicles to Mount Vernon and Arlington nor conmecting systems, it is of too much general interest locally 1o fail to state that there is an impor- tant bus line operated from Alexan- dria to Camp Humphreys, which con- nects with the coaches from Wash- ington. Two lines of sure-footed, sleek giants of the road traverse the historic and ¥ territory between the National Capital and Philadelphia, taking the Bladensburg road to Hyattsville, thence to Laurel and Baltimore, from there through Aberdeen, Md., and on 10 the metropolis of Pennsylvania by way of Havre de Grace. Operated by the Red Star Line and Peoples Transit 0., these busses, among the finest and inost complef equipped to be seen on the roads today, make the one-way trip in 420 minutes—7 hours. The mo- torist knows what remarkable time this is. Each of these two lines makes two trips a day, another indication of the march of progress and a straw in the wind relative to what the traveler may reasonably expect within the next few years. The Peoples line starts at Fourteenth street and Pennsylvania avenue and the Red Star busses leave from the same point. New York in Eleven Hours. | The New York jump is the longest undertaken by any bus line operating out of the city, and the busses run- ning between the two points are really beautiful examples of the best the modern bus builder has to offer in the way of safety, comfort, speed and con- | venience. -avelers making this trip | comment upon the-swiftness and the | sureness of the flight, the complete lack of trouble experienced, the ap- parent ease with which the huge, broad-bottomed vehicle cuts down the scores of miles which separate Capitol Hill from City Hall Park. This line is operated by the Palace Coach Co.. and the one trip daily is made in 11 hours of enjoyable touring. The start- ing place is the Annapolis Hotel. Bladensburg, Md., apparently 18 the favored spot of motor busses, inas- much as six different lines run to or through the little town famed in ESTATE, American history as 4 battleground of the War of 1812. Among the lines which serve to make Bladensburg a “bus city” are the two Philadelphia systems, one Baltimore line, one New York bus, one Laurel line and a bus to East Riverdale and Bladensburg School. From the W. R. & E. starting point at Fifteenth and H streets northeast the run to the Bladensburg School is made in 13 minutes, with 66 trips a day, while the other run, through Bla- densburg to East Riverdale, is accom- plished in 19 minutes, with 38 trips a day. From Washington out the Bladens- burg road the bus situation comprises six lines from the Capital, five from Blanedsburg to Laurel, four from Lau- rel to Baltimore, two to Philadelphia and one on through to New York City. ‘The Bladensburg road is, therefore, the most traversed by busses emanat- ing from the Capital and has become the leading artery by which this city is connected with the larger cities of the North by motor coach transpor- tation. leading out of Washington to are becoming more and more crowded with the fast-moving, ¢! limbed adjuncts of the already. exiat. ing transportation systems, and from the Capital to Cherrydale and through to Fairfax are found four lines. At present there is but one line mak- ing the rum #from Washington to Bal- timore exclwnively, and that is the Washington Motor Coach Company, which maintains a _terminal at Four: teenth street and Pennsylvania a nue, and makes 16 trips dally. The mile one-way passage from station to station s made in one hour and three-quarters, an average which the Washington motorist will concede 1s 2 thoroughly excellent one.
