FINANCIAL, STRENGTH SHOWN BY OLSAND RALS Tobacco Shares Rise—Steel| and Motor Issues Are Not Actlve. ay 25.-The two groups which attracted the most at- tention in today's market on the buy- ing side were the oils and the ralls. count for the strength -in these two =ats of stocks. The oils were simply giving more recognition to the price fnerease announced last week and continued Monday. 3 The rails were taking more notice of the April traffic figures and of the predictions that with the large crop now indicated there would be a rec- ord-hreaking volume of tonnage next Autumn May Mean Higher Dividends. This might easily mean higher divi dends for some of the old established vailway shares. The strength today fn stocks like Atchison, New York , Central, Atlantic Coast Line and Bal- timore and Ohio was significant in connection. _ Chesapeake and Union Pacific, Delaware and Ijudson, Delawave, Lackawanna and Western and Reading were going along with the others. Shares of the anthracite companies were evidently well over the effects of the strike. Wabash was one of the feature: and the renewal of the demand for | Texas and Pacific, which appears to be in & position to pay dividends if it chooses. The Southern road was not held back by the uncertainties of the cotton outlook and the disappoint- ing course which the market for the ataple has heen taking for so long. shares continued more ac- sing prices. United Cigar van up sharply. American Su matra was quite a feature in the buy- ing. It was responding to the an- nouncement that the proposed reor- ganization plan shortly would be put into effect Motors Are Inconspicuous. Motor shares were no longer con- spicuous. During the greater part of the time General Motors was virtually vnchanged and Hudson Motor lower. Jordan Motor, which had closed the day before at 307, went up to 31, then lost most of the gain. There was some further 1alk of the repurchase | of Mack Trucks by people who had soild hizher up. Studebaker was in- clined to sag. Du Pont, on the other | hand, was at one stage up over a point Steel shares for the most part were not at all active. They were losing | no ground. neither were they gaining. Steel common was holding just above nd Bethlehem Steel around 38%% which represented prices unchangel trom the Monday final. l Markets at a Glance NEW YORK, (#).—Stocks higher; rail and equipment shares advance. WHEAT HAS SETBACK, BUT RALLIES LATER Unfavorable Crop Reports Fail to Boost Prices Greatly—Liver- pool Market Is Weak. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May —Despite un- favorable crop reports both from the Northwest and Southwest, wheat prices underwent an early sethack to- da)'. Relative weakness of the Liver- pool wheat market, together with some moisture in the Northwest, had a bearish effect. Opening unchanged to 1 cent lower, wheat declined all around, but later rallled. Corn and oats were easy, corn opening un- changed to a half cent off and then showing a general drop. Provisions developed firmness. Selling of some wheat into store here todayv helped to relieve tension as to settlement of May congracts. There were but two sales in the bond division. Washington Raflway & Electric 48 came out at 82%, while Poiomac Electric cons. 5s figured in a small turnover at 10013. Bankers in Plea for Farmers. Inquiry among Washington bank- ers shows that there is a wide diffe ence of opinion over action ths Congrese should or should not take in aid of the farmers. Many he- lieve that the plight of the farmers i« one that Congress cannot or, hetter perhape, should not deal with di- rectly because any special assistance may come under the head of class legislation and be illegal. On the other hand, several bankers insist the farmers certainly need help and must have it sooner or later. They have no union through which to de. mand and obtain higher pay for thei work and products. Unlike union men they receive no extra pay for over time toll, although they work from dawn to dark during the harvest sea son. Furthermore, they have to he on the job 365 days a vear, as the - cows have to be milked and the horses and other animals fed. National prosperity, the bankers say, depends to a great degree on the prosperity of the American farmers and it is wholly unfair for the agri cultural workers of the country not 1o get splendid financial rewards in proportion to the efforts they put forth. A significant contributing faetor is the continuance of increase in pass enger receipts. April being the eighth . consecutive month that revenues from this source recorded an improve. ment .over corresponding month eof preceding year. < The North American Co. has de clared regular . quarterly dividends of 2%% in common stock on the com mon, and 75 cents on the preferred. both payable July 1 to stock of rec ord June 5. Cooper Discusses Credit Banks. In an address at Montgomery. Ala Commissioner R. A. Cooper ‘ef tha Federal Farm Loan Board declared the intermediate credit banks have never sought to render a rediscount- ing service except whers local bank- ing facilities have been inadequate. Where their policies have been un- dersiood their service has been wel- comed by the banking fraternity. “Their future power of usefulness. he said, “will be just what the farm- Stoek .| ers, on the one hand, and bankers, on the other, want it to be. It should continue, as it is now, a. stabilizing influence. a reservolr of credit to go to during a period of distress or temporary embarassment, or for a long pull as in the growing of herds of livestock, where so much as three years' credit may be re- | quired.” Poppy Drive Great Success. In the banks in Washington today were stationed many very attractive young women who were selling pop- pies in connection with the big drive * now being carried on by the Amer! can Legion. .Bank customers, as wi as officials and employes, were \er,\ generous in giving the campaign a boost, and “buddy popples” were very much in evidence in all the city's financial institutions during the day. Phone Rights Prove Popular. New York reports that the new : American Telephone and Telegraph rights show steady accumulation in Wall Street. The rights advanced fractionally vesterday in sympathy with the higher price for the tele- ° phone company’s stock. While these rights are listed on the Washington Exchange, most of the trading in them is done through the New York - Exchange. - Latest Cotton Forecast. .
