Spacial Dispatch to The Star EW YORK, May 5.—On siderably reduced volume of trading the market today was variable, buton the whole inclined to higher prices. Oil shares were strong, up all the way from a half point to 2 points. Sugar stocks were in demand, wi extending to 3 points or more The sugar situation is one of the most. interesting of any. The very low prices have stimulated world con- sumption to an extracrdinary degree. The question is whether the increased demand will offsel the enormous out- put of the Cuban crop. WHEAT AGAIN SHOWS TENDENCY TO DROP Trading Start* Higher, But Soon Turns Easier on Increased Sell- ing for Southwest. , By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, May 5.—Although wheat prices started higher today, the mar- ket soon turned easy. Initial gains were ascribed to an upturn in Liver- pool quotations, but increased selling hers, chiefly on the part of houses with Southwest connections, led to a reaction. Torecasts of cooler, unsettled weather in the Spring crop are a ten- dency likewise to weaken values. and so, too, did absence of indications that any immediate settlement of the | British general strike was in prospect. Chicago opening figures, % to 1% | higher, May (new), 1.69% to 1.39%. and July, 1.39 to 1.39%;, were followed by an irregular decline to well below yesterday's finish. Corn and oats traders took their cue from the action of wheat. After opening unchangea to half cent off, July, 75% to 758, the corn market underwent a material sag all around. Oats started at % to % advance, July, 41%. Later slight losses were shown. In line with hog values the pro vision market was firmer. High. 4210 425 55 July AT B8 September ..
