THURSDAY. Growing Use of Microphone/r by Opera Singers and Theatrical Artists. Dy the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 1.—Within the past 16 months Radio, King of Ether, has greatly extended the boundaries of a vast domain into several terri- torles where support’ once was lac ing. Prominent artists have held out the glad hand of welcome and there is a growing use of the microphone by theatrical producers, movie malkers, sport officials and book pub- lishers ‘to arouse public interest in the results of their labor. 1t was only in Janua that John McCormack, tenor, ‘and Lucrezia Bori, prima_donna of the Aetropolitan Opera Company. sang in station WEAF to an invisible au- dience estimated at from 6,000,000 to 3,000,000 persons. Broke Down Barriers. This marked the first time inter- nationally famous artists broadcast in America. Before then there was a decided hesitancy, if not opposition, upon their part toward appearing be- fore the microphone. A few of the biggest theatrical su cesses played to capacity houses that night, but many of the other plays were confronted with rows of empty seats. Persons connected with the theaters were unanimous in their con- viction that radio largely was re- sponsible. ‘Radio constitutes the menace the theater ever faced liam A. Brady, the producer, then declared. From Frank Gilmore, e: ecutive secretary of the Actors Equity Association, came the word IhuL the organization considered radio a “terrible menace to the actor, Since then. however, the changes in attitude have been many. At Mr. Brady’s office it was revealed he not only had bought radio but that he no longer considered it a menace to the theater. Some Plays Adaptable. “Mr. Brady feels there are certain types of plays very adaptable to broadcasting.” his representative said. In these instances, he believes the results obtained through the enter- tainment of radio listeners, interest in the plays and resulting attendance at the theater are good. Where pro- ductions are not suitable for broad- casting. he, of course, is opposed tol such presentation.” A willingness to ¢ “terrible” from ‘‘menace’ was ex- pressed by Mr. Gilmore, who said the e((ufl\ has no opposition to its mem- bers broadcasting any play in which they are appearing. providing they are given extra reimburseme eighth of their regular salarie: member wants to make a personal appearance before the microphone, he may do so without remuneration. if such is his desire. Other producers have duplicated Mr. Brady's broadcasting of plays. Morris Gest, who permitted “The Miracle” to be sent out through the ether, recent- ly approved a similar presentation of Carmencita and the Soldier.” The Shuberts tried “The Student Prince” on the air and then followed with “Princess Flavia." ! Crosby Galge, however, said he felt anything that kept people in their homes during the evening naturally would hurt attendance gt the theater nd added he had noted no increased attendance in instances where his plays had been broadcast. Stars Making Appearances. Cumerous stage sars are making personal appearances before the mi- crophone. What has followed as a re- ult of broadcasting by MecCormac and Bori now is an old story. This year they repeated their performance. Marion Talley and Mary Lewis, the two new American members ol the Metropoiitan, have jolned many othel of their group who have broadcast. \While the Metropolitan has no ob- jection to its members broadcasting under certain conditions, a representa- tive said it was not believed that the beauty and dramatic power of a com- | piete opera could be transmitted via the radio. As to whether the dial will ever find its way to the Metropolitan stage—that’s another question. Warner Bro: the motion picture orzanization, first built a broadcasting station for its Western studio and then econstructed another in New York. In addition to other features of these programs, film plays often are broadcast and stars of the company | make frequent appearances. The other movie companies ulso make use of the microphone and many sattions have regular feature reviews of pictures and news about the plays and stars. Just before the opening of his last picture in New York recently Douglas Fairbanks gave an interview at WJZ on a line-up with several other stations. As another viewpoint on the sit ation is a report of the United States Department of Commerce, which says that a bad slump in revenue derived from motion pictures in Jupan is attributed to radio. Pro- ducers in Ameris however, report business as good in this country, and production is going along at'a rapid rate. P s, Latham of the MeMillan Co. publishers, said he believed people turned to the radio primarily for music, but added that when the “lit- erary audience has become interested in radio” increased sales of books and more reading will be the results. After a book had been reviewed over the radio of a Western station the sales at the bookstores the fol- lowing day showed a marked ad- vance, R. T. Bond of Dodd, Mead & Co. reported. From' Scotland comes a dispatch to the effect “broadcasting appears to have increased rather than dimin Ished the number of book readers.” Virtually all Amefican publishers have stated they have no fear of radio. The games of many base ball leagues and numerous athletic events now are broadcast. While Miller Huggins, manager of the New York Yankees, in the rush, of training season, was not prepared to state definitely whether he fa- vored or opposed radio reporting of games, ho said: “Offhand, 1 would say that radio reporting has not lessened attendance at ball games. It was done last year and the American League had its of last year greates w op the adjective manager of the New Xoll\ Ginnls‘ said: “The National League has a rule against radioing| ball games for all but the world se- ries, and I am in favor of this rule.” Broadcasting of fights was once stopped by Tex Rickard, the pro- moter, but a few weeks ago he is- sued a statement he was not op- posed to radio. Atop of his new Madison Square Garden is a large broadeasting station. Radio Phone Service. | cneed salesmen. APRIL 1, 1926. LP—WALF. ! HELP AND SIT o ovening familiar Fenlker.
