A grotesquely impressive married woman has quite a different position from a grotesquely impres- sive girl, and the vogue of very thin ugliness was just then beginning to have fts supporters among the elect. He still employed odd mo- ments agreeably in designing her gowns and headdresses. “Mrs. Hilary Fraser has a genlus for dress,” some would say, “and her gowns always seem a part of her.” “Yes, the best part of her,” others less kindly would agree. One evening Celia was sitting near the door of a small reception room, waiting for her motor to be an- nounced. Hilary had gone abroad un- expactedly to look up data regard- ing his book, and she had been forced to keep their social engagements without him. As she sat there, two women on a cassone just outside the door began talking about her. She did not realize at first whom they were speaking of, but when she di1 she continued to listen more out of laziness than curi- osf! She felt no compunction at all. 'On dit,” remarked the first woman, que ¢’ est un marriage blanc.” “On a raison?” returned the other. “Of course it's a ‘white marriage’! What man éould really embrace a jeweled image as a wife!” 5 ‘The other tittered. *‘Jeweled image! She's far more like a jeweled fish—a queer fish!" “How too unkind of you! At least call her a mermald!” “Well, isn't a mermaid a queer fish?" Then they both tittered. “Why on earth do you suppose he did it?" the first speaker went on. “Pity, my dear. I've known Hilary Fraser all my life. He's an awfully good sort, but high-lown rather, and mad about art. This girl's father was a protege of his—a genius, he says, though_ the world doesn't seem to agree with him. Well, this Gibbs, the girl's father, dumped her on Hilary as a ward, without a penny! I’cor Laura took her off his hands as long as she lived, but when she died there he was! Plante, with this milistone round his neck. He couldn’t get any.one else to marry her—and of course he couldn’t let her starve If he'd set up alone, they'd sajd she was his mistress-—"" “But ‘why not?" asked the other. “That would have heen much the most sensible thing to do.” “My dear, you don't know Hilary He's just the sort to choose the Quix otic way out of a mess.” “But some one told me the girl had money of her own?" “Some one told you wrong then. Maudie Grey-Mannering, Hilary's niece, told me last Spring that Gibbs didn’t leave a farthing. She said that Hilary had made up some story to save the girl's feelings and that the allowance he gave her before he mar- ried her was out of his own pocket. He called it an advance on Gibbs' paintings. Poor Laura let it slip out one day—and Maudje's awfully sharp, you kno aturally she's furious over Hilary's: marriage, because his fortune would have gone by rights to her and her children. Now I suppose most of it will go to the ‘queer fish' in case_he dies first.” “f wonder if the Gibbs girl guessed she hadn't anything from her father?” “Good heavens! What a question! Think of those greeny Chinese eyes. Are they the eyes of credulous inno- cence? Of course, she knew it. She schemed to marry him from the very f u may he sure.” “Well, pity is closer kin to con- tempt than it is to love,” observed the other thoughtfully. “I shouldn't care to be in her shoes. “] shouldn’t care to be in his! I can't endure her, can you?" “No. She gives me the creeps.” Here a footman came to tell them their car was waiting and they went away. That night Celia lay awake a long time, and she found this very un- pleasant, as she was used to falling asleep as soon as her h touched the pillow. Had her thoughts been agree- able she might have felt different! but they were most disagreeable, a so after a while she took up the ivory cup and ball from her bedside table and, rising, went over to the window. She drew back the curtains and sat wrapped in her dressing gown, play- ing with the quaint toy and gazing out over the park. She iiked to watch the stars and electric lights through the Winter branches. For some rea- son she drew a fantastic pleasure hav “Around the Corner” is a Star Branch -Office’ from this mingling of artificial glitter with the austere radiance of the heavens. She s=at there now, staring out at them, trylng to change the mo- » SHE TOOK THE IVORY BALL AND CUP FROM HER BEDSIDE NT OVER TO THE WINDOW. THE EVENING By Amelie Rives notonous flow of her thought, but soon the click-click of the ball in its cup began accenting the words: “A queer fish—a queer fish—a queer fish. " She stopped playing with it and leaned her head against one hand, her eyeg still on the Winter trees and the points of scattered light sown through them. All at once a new light dimmed them. This illumination was in her own mind. She was re- calling ‘vividly a glaring, spotlighted scerte in the Sieburg Theater, where she had been two nights ago. This theater, brand new, and the pride of its owners, was in reality a sort of lesser hippodrome and vaudeville com- bined, “and the scene that she now recalled one of diving and swimming. It had been featured as the unique event of the evening, but Celia had thought it very poor. The diving was nothing unusual, the so-called swim- ming contests mediocre. The chief “aquatic artist,” as the program termed her, a short, overmuscled woman in a sealy singlet, had not at all come up to one's idea of human fish—another title given her on the play bill. She had not stayed under water by several seconds as long as Celia could nor equaled her swift. ness. As for her so-called high dive— here Celia picked up her ivory toy again and began playing with it. Her closed lips wore their slight smile. She sat there some 20 minutes longer, then rose and went back to bed. In three more minutes she was sound asleep. The next morning when Donovan brought her breakfast tray she asked her also to fetch the directory. TABLE Donovan was a small, vigorous, taci- turn woman of 50-0dd. She and Celia liked and trusted each other. Neither of them was affectionate by nature and hoth of them detested chatter of any kind, so they were admirably suited. In a little while Donovan brought the directory, laid it on the bed and took away the tray, for, as Celia only ate a buneh of grapes and drank one cup of tea for breakfast, it Was soon over. When Donovan had gone she he- gan searching in the columns of the directory for the address she wanted First came the Sieburg Theater, then the Sieburg Theatrical and Vaudeville Co,, then Abel and Joe Sie- burg, Inc. She decided to go to the office of | the incorporated hrothers. It Abel Siehurg that she wished to see. She had heard from an actress of her acquaintance that he was the more important of the two. = She telephoned herself from her bedroom to ask at what time Mr. Abel Sieburg could be seen. A fat, cross voice replied, “From 10 to 12 morn- ings, 2 to 5 afternoons,” and cut her off. She chose the earlier hours and began to dress without ringing for Donovan. CHICAGO, March 4. — “Kugene Field, 1850-1895, the Children's Poet,” is the simple inscription on the tomb which will receive the body of the poet next Sunday morning. The simple burial service of the Episcopal Church will mark the final interment at the Church of the Holy Comforter at Kenilworth, a suburb. Many of Field's acquaintances and prominent newspaper men, literary men and many high personages, in addition to his family, will be pres- ent. At the conclusion of church services the choir and dignitaries will form a procession to the Memorial Cloister, close by, which contains the Field tomb. The body will be placed in the vault and the marble piece sur- mounting the tomb lowered into place. For thiry years the poet was buried in Graceland Cemetery. ROMAN RUINS VANISHING. Archeologists Needed to Preserve Relics of Empire. CHICAGO, March 4 (#).—Commer- cial enterprises and the elements are destroying the ruins of Imperial Rome so fast that within a short time its buildings will be & memory, Miss Es- ther B. Van Deman, associate of the Carnegie Institute, told a University of Chicago audience today. ‘““‘Archeologists’ should be trained,” [ she said, “to visit Rome and make in- terpretations of the structures now standing, because within 50 years there will be few records available. The famous aqueducts built by Roman emperors which have stood- for: cen- turies will have entirely disappeared in half a century. “In the past, ar- cheological interests have met with opposition on the part of Italian pre- miers. Mussolini, however, in view of his intention to foster every aspect of Italian patriotism, is behind any move to restore -or record the monuments of Roman history.” 5 RSO AT W Greek Genbral Disappears.
