I have tried to find out, principally in Cairo, where most of the members of these ‘‘com- mittees” sit on sidewalks drinking much coffee, and spill much blood—in conversation. Columns could be quoted of such incitements as those given above, and literature of this sort is passing over all the caravan routes from Persia to the coast of Morocco. Most responsible foreign officials, not only the English in comparatively placid Cairo but even the French here in war-torn Syria, ridicule talk of any concerted movement of the Arab peoples to regain their inde- pendence. Students and visionaries who try to organize the many races which speak Arabic face a hopeless task, for the inertia and immemorial hatreds of the Orient make anything like united action in a “holy war’” im- possible. That opinion seems well founded. Krim's Succes Broadcast. But it indisputable that when for years defeated the Spaniards and followed this up by at first taking much ground from the French, exaggerated rumors of his prowess circulated wherever Arabic is spoken.
