44 WALL STREET LIST AT HIGHER LEVELS Saturday Market Strong, With Motors and Chain Store Stocks Leading. BY L. A. FLEMING. | Washington is today feeling the ef- | fects of the great educational cam- | Daign that attended the marketing of | a very large part of the $17,000,000,000 | Liberty and Victory issues of bonds | and notes, back in 1917, when the United States prepared for and en- tered the great World War. Prior to that time Washington in eators knew enough about stock and bond trading to go to their bankers or brokers and place their orders. in- dicating security and price, and re- peating the operation when they wished to add to their holdings, shift investments or take profits. They were sufficiently educated not to require the advice of those in the business. Some of the less informed investors did the same thing until| their losses through unwise buying and the establishment of the slogan “Ask Your Banker” brought them | to their senses There are educated buyers of se- curities today, lots of ihem in th traders who know when to take ofit. The term “huver” is used | edly because the sreat rank and | fie of the laymen who operate in stocks and bonds always favor the | buving side. and this is true of | woman operators as well as of men. Liberty Bonds Educational. The first, second and third loan bond campaigns and ceeding issue of Victory notes were the first intimation to millions of | people of small means that there was | {such a thing as a bond: that there | was a way through the partial pay ‘ ment plan that they mizht become | real investors. not only save and a cumulate. but receive interest in e cess of that paid by the banks on savings. and take advantage of ad vances that might occur In bonds or BY STUART P. WEST. NEW YORK. October 10.—Heavy trading and higher prices in several sections of the list characterized to- day’s brief session on the Stock Ex- change. The motors and the depart. ment and chain store shares were the most conspicuous again. A score or more of new high records were es- tablished. Profit-taking sales in the second and last hours checked the rise in many directions. Outstanding Features. The outstanding features in the automobile. group were Dodge Bros. A and General Motors. The former changed hands in large volume above 42, while General Motors shot for- ward several points, also to a new top.
