WOMAN’S Planked Meals May Be Decorative BY LYDIA LE BARON WALKER. 1t is pleasing to vary the fashions of our meals, just as it is agreeable to vary the style of our dress. If, therefore, when serving a meal. | you can have that instant, if. not spoken response on the part of fam- ily or guest, something has been achieved. Planked meals have a way of “look- |ing good.” There is something rather special about their appearance. I deed, they have a ‘“company look One of the reasons why they can be made to look more attractive than Yood served in separate containers, is that you can work in interesting little color schemes and the suggestion of pattern In the dish so arranged. Varieties. Planked meals are the ones at which |meat and vegetables ave allowed to make their appearance upon the same capacious platter. Planked steak is the most familiar of the planked meals, and to some few represents the only one there is. There are, how. the many different Kinds as we choose to comcoct. A very nice anked meal may follow the first serving of a roast chicken. The meat n be taken from the hones and then mixed with what giblet sauce there is left. Bolled rice, dry and flaky rounds it on a platter. A few slices |of fresh tomato can top it. Green peas or beane, fresh or canned either form an outer laver or are scattered over the rice. If the beans or peas are omitted, green pepper, used sparing Iy, makes a pleasing color combina tion. Hamburg steak, made into a Vien na roast by baking In a solld seasoned ball in the oven, is delicious served in planked style. Cook potatoes in the same pan with the meat, making them an attractive brown. = Cut carrots lengthwise, boil, season with butter, salt and pepper. and put around the potatoes and meat. Chop parsley and sprinkle over the entire dish. Celery tops may be substituted if preferred Veal, besf and braised lamb can be at- tractiviely served planked stvle. If mashed potato s used a very pleax- ing touch will be given the meal if it is pressed through a pastry tube into rosettes to ornament as well as prove filling. | Ariston. i The Greeks recognize the value of | planked dishes and how one food helps impart its flavor to another in this method. Tomorrow’s planetary aspects hold out no alluring conditions or pros- pects. On the contrary, they indi- cate a perfod of gloom and depres- slon, and every effort must be made to counteract such untoward in- fluences. The best antidote for spells such as these is work or recreative amusements, combined with a fixed resolution not to allow disappoint- ment or anxlety to ingulf you fn an abyss of futile despair. In the even- ing there is a glimmering of a better atmosphere, and, while the clouds will not all have rolied away, there will be sensed a brighter outlook, and, above all. the weakness of vielding, instead of fighting, will be fully dem- onstrated. Children born tomorrow will enjoy practical immunity to sickneas during their infancy, but the signs denote that they wiil not attain their ma jority without experiencing serfous illness. Care and prompt attention will obviate any deplorable results. In character and disposition they will be very sensitive, and unless this tendency is curbed they are liable t become “‘touchy.” They will be fairly and reasonably obedient, quick to learn, prompt to imitate, and have very affectionate natures. They will, unfortunately, possess exaggerative fmaginations, and, while not guilty of Iying in the strict acceptation of the term, they will be disposed to ro- mance. If tomorrow is your birthday you can be read like an open book. There is nothing subtle, deceptive or mys terlous in either words or actions. You are open and aboveboard in all things, and no one who knows you ever wonders what there is in the back of your head. Your candor and frankness disarm criticism, and none aver envy any success that you may achleve. You are not temperamentally equipped to handle any matter with important or far-reaching ramifica tions, and vou accomplish more alone than when in association with an- other. Your friends are many, and vou are the confidant of all. No matter how frank you may be about your own affairs, you are always secretive about those of others.
