Originally the detector action was obtained by using a “C” battery in the grid circuit connected directly to put the required amount of nega- tive bias or potential on the grid. Later it was discovered that the in- troduction of a grid condenser into the grid circult connected directly th d circuit of the detector tube blocking effect through the accumu |lation of negative electrons on the grid, which automatically brought the operating point of the grid to a lower point on the characteristic curve and produced the detector action. The use of a grid leak of the proper value made it possible for the negative charges to leak off when they had performed their function and brought the grid back to its original starting point, ready to g0 through the. opera. tion again. Amplification Explained. This works out very well for the detector action, but in order to pro- duce the best results for amplification the grid of the amplifier tube must be kept at a definite negative grid poten- tial so as to keep the operating point of the tube on the straight portion of the characteristic curve. This func- | tion is best performed by a_grid or . battery connected as shown In Fig. 3. with the negative terminal toward the grid side of the grid circuit and the positive terminal of the bat- tery toward the fllament side. STAR, WASHINGTO EXPERTS WATCHING SUPERPOWER TEST iBureau of Standards Chiefs Watch Developments From Operations at WGY. : One of the most interested parties listening in to the 50,000-watt super- power tests being conducted this week by station WGY is that com- posed of engineers and officlals of the Bureau of Standards. Although declining to comment on the study of the experiment made so far, it was suggested by officlals of the bureau today that listeners liv- ing within a few hundred miles of the Schenectady antenna need not expect any startling change in the reception of 50,000 watts over the hitherto customary 2,000 watts. As pointed out by engineers, a wave pro- pelled with the vastly increased pow- er will not_be proportionately easier to tune. What is hoped to como with the added watts is greater dis- tance, a riding over of the static dis- turbances and a decrease in “fading.” In the first two broadcasts with WGY's new transmitter several ex- perts who listened to the signals closely reported that the Schenec- tady program tuned distinctly sharp- er than had been expected and that the interference with stations on wave, lengths close to that of WGY was very little. The only point at which the super- power failed to live up to expecta- tons was in overcoming static. The first of the two tests was conducted amid unusually severe atmospheric S | Summer *Time DangerTime for Babies UMMER is the purgatory of motherhood. Of all the babies D. C.
