158,000,000 VOTED FOR BRITISH NAVY Cruiser - Building Program Forced Through—Pacific Figures in Debate. By the Associated Press LONDON, July 30.—After much mention in debate of the United States and Japan, the House of Commons has approved a cruiser-building pro gram involving expenditure of £58,000,000. The former Labor premier Ramsay MacDonald r e strenuous effort: secure pa > last night of an amend- ment condemning the program, the government's stand was when his plan was rejected t of 276 to 140. He made the-plea that it was unnecessary to inflict an addi- tion expenditure of 000,000 on an already overburdened country, adding 1o this the ument that there was absolutely nothing to indicate a war for many years. Deprecates War Talk, He deprecated any suggestion that the United tes an Japan were vossible enemies. Several other speak- ers also referred to this phase of the naval problem. Rear Admiral Sueter, superintendent of afrcraft construction, ald that there might be f re n Japan and the Unite nd that “we might be wvm:ml n the same way as America was dragged into the great wa Hints as given in the debate of danger from American naval power in the Pacific have not attracted special attention, however. Tt is pointed out that they were uttered by navy en- thuslasts having no political influence outside their own constituencies. It is generally conceded the *“eco- nomists” dealt some telling blows in the debate, and the opposition news- papers are making much capital of it. The economy group, of which Win- ston Churchill was supposed to be the head, had strenuously opposed com- mitting the country to a building pro- gram in future years, but the chan- cellor vielded because of threats of resignation by the First Lord of the| admiralty, W. C. Bridgeman, and the ®ea lords. There is plenty of support for the government so far as last night's de- bate is concerned, especially through the statement, in citing the justifi- cation of the shipbuilding program, that the existing ships were fast wear- ing out and the emphasis placed on Mr. Bridgem contention that if Great Britain did not lay down ruisers this year she would ve only | seven of her war design, compared | with 18 of the United States, 21 of Japan and 9 of France —_—— Boy Gives Life for Another.
