FIN MARKET 15 STRONG INFINAL TRADING Motor, Tobacco and Utility Stocks Are Leaders. 'R Many New Highs. BY STUART P. WE 1al Dispatch to The Star W YORK, Jun The upward | trend on the St Exchange con- ' tinued today with further gains in numerous individual issues and about; a score of new high records. Taking the list as a whole, the advance was moderate, but recent losses in many instances were more than recovered as the market became definitely stronz T, . NE Motor Issues Leaders. Motor shares were the leaders with | ® big turn-over in General Motors, Hupp. Packard, the Pierce-Arrows and Willys-Overland. Dupont went along with the General Motors. There were 15.000 shares of the latter stock taken at 813, after which it ran up to 82. The hand of a power- ful pool was plainly visible, the operation being based upon the talk of increased dividends The strength in the Pierce-Arrows persisted in face of the seemingly official denial that there is anything in merger rumors or in gossip about 4 dividend on the old 8 per cent pre- ferred. The rise in Willys-Overland above 20 was founded upon reports that interests apt to know most about the company's affairs had been in- creasing their holdings. New High in Woolworth. New high records were made in Woolworth, which got well above 140, and in Philadelphia Co., which was re- sponding to information that new anking interests had become associ- ated with the company, joining forces with the bankers already long domi- nant. There were new high prices also for Lee Rubber, Vivaudou, New- port News and Hampton, Yellow Cab, United Cigar Stores, Tobacco Prod- ucts A. Phillip Mor American Car and Foundry preferred, New York Dock preferred and Atlantic, Gulf and West Indies preferred. American Can Gains. Havana Electric had one usual run-ups. American Can .gained 3 points or There was short cov- ering in Baldwin Locomotive. Sym- pathizing with the strength in Phila- delphia Co.. Market Street Railway prior preferred had a brisk run-up, and the first preferred gained a point. The advance extended to the United Rail- way investment issues. Chicago Taxi went alonz with Yellow Cab New York Dock common jumped over 3 points. There were sharp upturns in nigh priced industrials such as Na- tional Lead and General Electric and special strength in Radio Corporation of America and Marlan Rockwell. Southern- Railway Up. The feature in the railway section was Canadian Pacific. It took pur- chases of only 5,000 shares to put the stock up over 4 points. Southern Railway, Rock Island, Texas and Pa- cific and St. Louis-San Francisco were in_demand. Further selling of Burns Brothers issues was due to the announcement | made the previous day that a new coal distributing company had been formed, at the head of which were interests formerly at the head of Burns Brothers Co. MARKET CLOSES STRONM of its NEW YORK, June 26 (#).—Stock | prices moved out of the narrow area in which they had been fluctuating on | the up side in today’s market. Bullish demonstrations were vigorously con- ducted in number of motors, to- i and public utilities, despite the | retention of stiff call mone: tes. Total sales approximated 50,000 | shares. The closing 1, s strong. In most wctive issues best prices of the | day were registered during the last hour. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 26.—United States Government bonds recovered somewhat today from the setback of Thursday, but elsewhere in the in- vestment classification there was no improvement This is the season where traders talk about the July reinvestment de- mand and generally attempt to an- ticipate it, but if there were any buy- ing of this kind it had no effect on prices. There was no change in the money outlook. The firmer tone for six month accommodations was not re- garded by bankers as significant of the long-time trend. It was notice- able that the Treasury issues held around their high points more firmly than shorter dated Liberties. WASHINGTON, The feature in the forelgn group was the Increasing pressure against French bonds. New lows on the present decline were made by French 78 and French $s.
