PARISH MEETINGS DUE NEXT MONDAY Episcopal Congregations of Diocese to Elect New Vestries for Year. The Monday following ter is, from the administrative point of view, the most important day of the year in the Episcopal churches in the Diocese of Washington. It is the day set apart by law for the elec- tion of the officers and the governing bodles of the parishes The Church of England was “es- tablished” in the colony of Maryland in 1692 At that time the colonial @ssembly enacted laws for the gov- ernment of the 31 parishes into whi the colony was divided. In 1198 the | State of Maryland repeated, with some changes, the original ‘“vestry act” and in 1502 the Congress of the Vnited States adopted the laws Maryland, including the “vestry ac 83 the law of the District of Co- lumbia. Both the act of the State of Mary- Jand and the act of Congress have Deen amended from time to time, the most recent amendment being that Which permits women to vote and to hold office in those parishes which petition for this right, but In the main the law remains as it was orig- inally adopted in 1692, Procedure Ts Outlined. Under the act the registered voters ©f every parish required to “as semble in their respective parishes @t their parish church, or, if shall be two or more Pro Episcopal churches in any b the church first built therein, Baster Monday, and proceed by a ma- Jority of votes to elect by ballot eight vestrymen, who, with the rec- tor of the parish for the time being, Bhall be deemed and considered the vestry of the said parish for the en- Suing year.” Under tho act the vestry becomes a Eorporate body with the right to bu: sell and hold property and to transact business in the name of the parish. The congregation is also required te “choose two sober, discrect and pious persons to be church wardens for the ensuing year. Every church warden &ifull have power to keep the peace and preserve order and decency in his respective church and chapel; and it shall be lawful for any church warden to apprehend any person SUilty of disorderly conduct or of making a n in any church or churchyard and turn such person out of the church. The newly elected vestries meet immediately after the gational meeting and elect from their own number a register, who is in fact the secretary of the parish, and one or more treasurers. In many parishes one treasurer receives and disburses the funds for parish support and an- other treasurer cares for moneys con- tributed for missions and benevo- lences. In several churches the con- gregational meeting hears the reports of the parish officers and societies and makes plans for the coming vear. It is becoming general to submit at this time a budget showing probable ex- penditures for all purposes and to re- celve the pledges of the congregation to raise the necessary funds In about one-fourth of the Episco- pal churches in the diocese the privi- lege of voting and of holding office has been extended to the woman members of the congregation, and in one parish, namely, Grace Church, Georgetown, women have been elected to the vestry. It is the general opin- ion of church people that where the women are allowed to vote there is a greater Interest shown by the whole congregation in the temporal affairs of the church, The diocese in which the elections will be held next Monday includes not only the District, but the four adja- cent counties of Maryland, name Montgomery, Prince Georges, Charl and St. Marys counties. There are 33 parishes and separate congregations, o will congre- Sunday School in Pageant. This order is concerned principally with assisting the rectors of parishes in their work among women, visiting the sick, caring for the needy and ar- ranging religious services for women. Many of the Junior Daughters are engaged In Sunday school work and in some parishes the Junior Daugh- ters look after the absentees. Nelther the senior order nor the junior is alldwed to raise money or to solieit gifts; their work is that of personal service. They are, however, encour- aged to give, and a number of women workers in the church are supported Dby the corporate contributions of the Dauguhters of the King.
