28 * FIN MOVES CONFUSING - INSTOCK MARKET, Copper Shares and Specialty Isstes Show Rather Bet- ter Headway. RY STUART P. WEST. i Dispatch to The Star, W YORK. April 3 zreater part of the time today the stoc imarket &howed little tendency one way or (6 other. Prices were extremely mixed, and interest in in- dividual moves. hetter:a The copper shares gave <! count of themselves under the lead of Ansgonda, while the steels were unable to make any headway toward higher prices. There were a number of special- v favorites, but the standard industrial and- railway shares were irregular. It was a professional market throughout. Tise in American Sugar. Tredictions that American would go on a $5 basis in May back of the rise in American Sugar stock’ across 67. The tendency in the vaw sugar market appeared to be flrmer, and this showed in a moderate harden- ing of prices in the stocks of the Cuban producers. L Supporting orders were apparent in the market for Anaconda following the statement of the previous day by the chairman of the board of directors that the outlook for the copper trade was hopeful, and that the recent decline in prices had been no more than part of the readjustment which has been going on generally toward a lower level. Amer- ican Smelting rallied nearly 2 points. However, in view of the frequent disap- Pointments sustained on the subject of copper, it will be hard to get public sentiment at all enthusiastic about this sroup of stocks. Stock Offer Advanced. It was not long ago that minority holaers of New Orleans, Texas and Mexico were being offered the privilege of turning in their stock at $114 a share in exchange for an equal face value of Missouri Pacific notes. Now this offer has been advanced to $120, and the ad- vertisement is being made attractive on the ground that holders of the stock are ®etting only $7, whereas having con- verted into the notes they would be get- ting $8.40. Those who did not succumb to the first offer are mot so keen (o yield to the second, for two reasons. In the first place, these Missouri Pact notes are callable at any time on 60 days' notice at par, and, therefore, holders of the New Orleans stock cannot have any firm ground for hope of recelving moru than $120. In the second place, New Orleans, Texas and Mexico earning well over $20 a share, could pay a lot more than the pres- ent $7. Activity in Specialties. Operations for the rise continued in numerous specialties. A capital split-up was the one subject of gos- £ip in connection with the high sell- ing prices for Nash Motors. Mack Trucks seemed to meet with 2 good deal of profit taking as it crossed 138. Central Leather pre- terred was pushed ahead vigorously on the strength of the recent im- provement in the leather trade. Some special business appeared in the Pierce Arrows and in International Nickel. The action of Vivaudou fit- ted in With reports of a new pool at work. Profit taking in Briggs Manufactur- ing occurred when there was no con- firmation of recent gossip about this company entering a new automobile consolidation. CLOSE IS IRREGULAR. During the centered a Sugar were Many Active Shares Depressed Point or More at End. BY the Associated Press. EW YORK, April 3.—Stock prices drifted aimlessly until the last hour today, when another sharp reaction in the grain market promoted a gen- eral renewal of selling pressure. Pre- viously good exhibitions of group strength had been given by the mo- tor and oil shares, with public util- ities reflecting a resumptipn of pool operations. Total sales fell below a million shares, for the first full-day fon this year, approximating only 000 shares. The closing was irregular. Many active shares were depressed a point or so in the final hour, in sympathy with breaks of 3 to 8 cents a bushel in grain prices. United States Cast Iron Pipe reacted 5 points. NEW YORK—Stock irregular; . public utilities active. Bonds mixed; French issues depressed by financtal crisis. For- i hanges steady; francs recover v break. Cotton lower; sym- pathy with grain. Sugar steadler; bet- ter spot demand. Coffee easy; trade selling. CHICAGO—Wheat weak; May declines 3 cents a bushel. Corn reactionary; prices break 8 cents a bushel. Cattle steady. Hogs strong. BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 3—Except for the weakness in French obligations, the bond market was decidedly bet- ter today. All French bonds went down and some of them made new low records for the year. The sell- ing, however, was not in such large volume as might have been antici- ated. French 8s went below par, French 7s, the most recently offered issue, broke over a point, and the de- partment of the Seine 7s had a very thin market, & loss of a fu)l point being scored on sale of a very few bonds. Of the French railway issues the Paris, Lyons and Mediterranean 6s were the weakest. Other Foreign Insues Firm. Other foreign bonds were little af- fected by the decline in the French obligations. In the South American group the feature was City of Monte- video 7s, which were in demand to- day at higher prices. At 91 the yleld is over 7% per cent. Domestic Bonds Strong. In domestic bonds, both investment and speculative issues were firm to strong. Liberty second 44s sold above 101 and the fourth 41;s above 1062 for the first in a long time. The first 41s and third 4%s were both higher, These cdvances were plain response to easier money. In specula- tive bonds the buying was renewed in the Seaboard issues, the adjust- ment Bs, the consolidated 65 and the refunding 4s all going higher. At to- day's market the 6 per cent bonds yield around 7 per cent and the re- funding 4s almost 61; per cent. B. & 0. Division Gains. One of the most striking incidents was the sharp run-up in Baltimore and Ohio Toledo-Cincinnati division 4s. These bonds had made a galn of over a point Thursday. Today the ad- vance was even more rapid, another new high being reached. Among the olls, Sinclair 6s went up over a point. Virginia-Carolina Chemical 78 were actively bought at advancing prices. Plerce Arrow 8s went up with the stock. Chile Copper 68 were the leaders of the copper group. IS MUCH BRIGHTER General Stimulus Appears for First Time in Five Years, Re- port States This is the “first Spring in five years with any evidence of general timulus in agricviture,” the Bureau of Agricultural Economics declares in | & report on the situation. There are no big agricultural sur- pluses except in eattle, the report said, “and. judging from the lessened population movement, an increased number of farmers apparently feel it financially safe to stay on the farms this Spring.” “Returning strength in live stock prices is the most impressive of all the general signs,” it declared. “Ex- cept for the cattle industry, wherein the numbers on feed have for two years tended to obscure the liquida- tion in actual breeding stock, agricul- ture has obviously emptied its sur- pluses of the major crops and ani- mals. Over the country as a whole reports indicate that farmers not gone into action £o hopefully in five years. GRAIN AND PROVISIONS. By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, April 3.—Notwithstanding that corn crumpled down today to new low-price records for the season wheat acored early gains. For a brief interval the overturning of values in the corn market pulled wheat prices lower, but then wheat made a sharp advance. Heavy selling by distressed owners of corn, who were intent on stopping losses, was the dominating factor in the corn market, whereas unexpected firmness of wheat quotations at Liverpool tended to lift wheat prices here. Besides some fresh export business in wheat was noted. Wheat opening prices in Chi- cago, varying from 3;-cent decline to half-cent advance, May 1.42% to 1.43% and July 1.32% to 1.331, were followed by a setback to 1.41% May, and then a sudden bulge in which May touched 1.45. Corn and oats lacked any adequate support from buyers until corn had gons decidedly under yesterday's bot- tom figures. ~Then the strength of wheat, together with profit-taking on the part of recent speculative sellers of corn, led to rallies which holsted corn to above yesterday's finish. Corn opered unchanged to 1% lower, May 98% to 99%, dropped to 97% for May and then rose to 99%. Oats started unchanged to % high- er, May 39 to 39%; descended to 38% for May, and later touched 39 , with all months showing fractional over- night gains. Provisions were responsive to a Jump of 23240 in the hogs market. WH May duiy £ Rylember CORN— May July Septemier OATS May July September iy Muy Beptember ARD— b u l(le May . July . . COTTON QUOTATIONS MOVE VERY LITTLE Weather Map Still Shows No Rain in Western Belt—Sales Slow. ‘20 | By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 3—The cotton market was quiet early today, but showed a generally steady undertone. The opening was steady at unchanged prices to a decline of 7 points in| response to ecasier late cables from | Liverpool. Active months sold 8 to| 11 points net lower after the call, July declining to 2479 and October to 24.25 under liquidation and local and Southern selling. Offerings were light and the market steadied up again before the end of the first hour, July advancing to 24.87, or within 3 points of yesterday's closing quota- tion. New Orleans Quotations. NEW ORLEANS, April 3.—The cot- ton market opened easy, as Liverpool came In about as due, but prices eased off 8 to 10 points to 24.77 for July and 23.96 for October on over- night selling orders. The weather map showed no rain in the Western belt and the forecast made no definite promise of rain except possibly some thundershowers, and the market ral- led slightly to 24.83 for July and 24.02 for October, or a recovery of 6 points from the opening lows. The market was more or less supported by expectation of bullish mill takings. Fall River reported sales of print cloths for the week at only 22,000 pleces. TRADING MAKES RECORD ON BALTIMORE EXCHANGE Special Dispatch to The Star, BALTIMORE, April 3.—Trading on the Baltimore Stock Exchange last month was extra heavy. Stocks sold aggregated 58,771 shares, while bonds sold amounted to $951,200 Several reasons are advanced for the increased activity. One of thes of course, is the fact that there has been more trading in stocks through out the country as a whole, and this has been reflected on the local boarc Also many additional stocks and bonds have been listed on the loc: exchange, and the arrangeme whereby odd lots are dealt in has n terially increased the activity. rd For that De years store vic oration th, SHORT-TERM SECURITIES. Ford, president of the Ford Motor Co., recently explained his connection with the Stout organiza- tion by saying that the Ford company is not considering the manufacture of complete planes, but is interested financially in the Stout company. “We are willing that the Ford name be used in this company,” Mr. Ford said, “because we believe that Willlam D. Stout, its president, has an exceptionally good plane. The planes that will be finished this year will be sold easily, we belleve, and we probably whl use our organiza- tion of Ford representatives in the large cities in ‘the sale of them. “While it is not the purpose of the Ford Motor Co. to enter the manu- facturing fleld in aviation, we prob- ably will find our place in the manu- facture of airplane motors.” Gult Ofl Corp. of Pa. 5% Hocking Val.
