BY J. C. ROYLE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, February 5.—The iron and steel business is still on the up-| swing, both ,as to production and| prices. Just how far that swing will! carry is uncertain, but some excel- lent authorlities predicted today there would be some slight drop notlceable in both output and prices before the end of the second quarter. In the meantime higher prices are develop- ing. Nelther Carnegie Steel nor Jones & Laughlin, in the Pittsburgh district, have changed from the high rate at which they have been operating. Any falling off shown this week will hav been due to cold weather. The Car- negie Company Is running 48 out of 58 blast furnaces and Jones & Laugh- lin have 11 out of 12 in blast. These furnaces continue to turn out suffi- clent iron for the open hearths and further price increases for this prod- uct are not now belng discussed. Several Advances Made. Advances have been made in sheets, wire and heavy rolled products in Pittsburgh territory by various in- terests, but no change has been made there in automobile sheets, which re- main at 4.75 cents a pound. One of the Pittsburgh independents has jumped wire §2 @ ton and there are indications others will follow sult. Of- ficlal advances of $2 a ton in heavy| products, steel bars, shapes and plates has been put into effect in Pittsburgh, | but these did not bring the level above that current unofficlally for those grades for the last two weeks. Hesitaney in pig iron buying 1is pronounced. Firmness In coke prices| is sufficlent to keep prices fairly! steady, but little activity is expected! until the foundries gome into the market for second quarter require-. ments. Scrap iron markets are weak, | with consumers apparently supplied for @ month ahead. Ohio Plants Rushed. American Sheet and Tin Plate plants In Ohlo are working at a high| rate of production and prices are up' $2 a ton except for automobile sheets. | The Youngstown iron and steel pro- ducers are at well over 90 per cent of capacity. It is belleved a large volume of orders will be released as soon as the weather moderates and settles down. | ADVANCE IN PRICES OF WOOLEN CLOTH Men’s Fabrics for Fall of 1925 Trade Average 10 or 12 Per Cent Above 1924. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. February 5—The American Woolen Co. opened its new lines of men's wear fabrics for the Pall of 1925 with an advance yester- day in prices on staple and semi- staple worsteds averaging 6.6 per cent as compared with the opening a year ago, and even more compared with Spring, when levels were cut about 7 per cent. No comparisons were made on woolen goods because of changing weaves and qualities, but in the open market it was estimated they averaged 10 to 12 per cent high- er than Fall, 1924, The following is a comparison of opening prices on three fabrics usually considered key numbers in the line: Spring 925, $263y% 267y 8875 382y $3.25 Fall, Spring. w24 fest 1824, $2.87% clay wor. $3.47% 11,000,000 BUSHELS OF GRAIN IN STORAGE WASHINGTON, D. €. Elevators at Baltimore So Full That Railroads Keep Ban on Shipments, Specia! Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, February &5.—Over 11,000,000 bushels of grain were in storage In the local elevators at the end of January, the greatest amount on record for this port. This figure compares with 9,700,000 bushels at the end of December. The continued heavy recelpts during January of wheat, rye and barley, the increased elevator capacity of the port and the slow export movement of these com- modities account for the large accu- mulation. This, in turn, has resulted in a con- tinuation of the embargees placed some time ago by the Pennsylvania, the Western Maryland and the Balti- more and Ohio Rallroads.
