J.,, January 16. —Samuel Whinery, civil engineer, who played an important part in the con- struction of rallroads In the Mlddle West, 1s dead at his home here. He was born near Salem, Ohio, 80 years ago. In 18€8 he helped lay out_the route of the Indianapolls and Vin- cennes Rallroad, now a part of the Pennsylvania system. So he boarded a train for Youngstown, and upon his arrival there he was taken in by the police. The disappearance of the boy brought reports that he had been ab- ducted by two men in an automobile. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 16.—For the second time vast numbers heard the tones of a world-famous grand opera star over the radio last night. This time it was Mme. Frances Alda, prima donna soprano of the Metropolitan Opera House, who made her first ap- pearance before the microphone. Her voice was broadcast in four songs from the studio of WEAF, New York, under the auspices of the Vie- tor Talking Machine Co. It was re- layed by telephone lines through seven other radlo stations In Eastern clties. These were WCAP, Washing- ton; WJAR, Providence; WFI, Phila- delphia; WDBH, Worcester; WGR, o Plttsburgh, and The other artists who performed for the invisible audience were Frank La Forge, composer-planist; the Vic- tor Concert Orchestra, Rosario Bour- don, conductor, and the Florentine Quartet. Following the precedent established at the first star radlo concert given recently by John McCormack and Lucrezia Borl, the audlence was re- quested to communicate its wishes concerning the continuance of these recitals by famous artists of the opera and concert stage.
