The lover of a lady of high degree used to enter her apartment at night through a secret foor. “The old-time partition has been torn away,” said Mr. Prince. “The room from which the lover entered is fivers and harbors bill, which would [n0W my dining room. But begause of the war the supply of hair has run short and it is impossible to get switches at a falr price. Ladies who have had their hair bobbed and then permanently waved at a dollar a waye are refusing to pay an unfair price for switches. Very sad. * kK ¥ X “But the bob is going” the hair- dressers say. “We are not dalug more than 40 per cent as many new bobs as we used to do.” Shucks. That's no proof. Baritone Heard by Large Audience in Concert at National Theater. John Charles Thomas, & favorite with Washington audiences. sang a program of illustrated songs at the Natlonal Theater before a large audi- ence yesterday afternoon. Mr. Thomas has a voice of beautiful baritane quality with particularly fine high notes. His enunciation in French and German were &8 good as in English. Two of his French songs, “L'Ab- besge,” by D'Erlanger, and Ravel's “Nicolette” THE EVENING BTAR, WABT‘IINGTOFV D, 0, FRIDAY, FANUARY 16, 1925. charming song, was written especially for Mr. Thomas. It was in his lighter numbers, how- ever, that Mr. Thomas won the ap- proval of his audience In general, for he has a decided flare for singing this {rpe of song. Howall's “Old Skinfint," Lord Berner's “Dialog,” Warlock's “Mr. Belloc's Fancy” and & new song, “The Table and the Chair,” by Harris, pleased his hearers greatly. His gen- erous supply of encores brought out more of these populgr numbers, juciud: ing the old Irish, “Kitty, My ve,” “Me ‘and My Little Banjo,” by Dich- mont (sung with an exquisite high last nots Manna-Zucca's Tour's ‘Mother o' Mine," Through,” by Arthur Penn, and “From T the Land of the Sky-blue Water,” by Cadman. The first group Included Italfan “Invocazione di Orfeo,” “Che flero Costume,” the German “Zuelgnung” of Strauss and Brahms' “O Liebliche Wangen,” with a new song by Joseph Marx, “Gebet.”, as the encare. In the second group, fol- lowing the “Drinking Song" from “Ham- let," the encore was Andre Messager's “La Maison Grise.” Other numbers were ‘Take, Oh, Take Those Lips Away,’ “Trees” and “The Wandering Jew." By the Associated Press. PREBORIA, Union of South Africa, January 186.—The report advocating return to the gold standard, which was made upon the invitation of the government by Prof. V. W. Kem- merer of Princeton University and Dr. G. Vis president of the Netherlands of Amsterdam, points out that South Africa is found to have been for some time near ‘& gold parity, and is now above parity. The commissioners conclude that further deflation is needless, as South Africa’s gold position is very strong, and gold is more stable than “man- agod paper.” Therefore, they believe It would be a wise and comservative action on the part of South Africa to clinch now with the gold parity and definitely return to the gold standard on July 1.
