ALBANY, N. Y., January T.—Gov. Smith told the new Legislature in his first message to it today, that the Volstead act must be enforced, but that no State legislation was neces- sary in this respect. WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., January 7—William Jennings Bryan, writing to John Temple Graves of the Palm Beach Post, denies the rumor that he has retired from politics. To his In- timate friends he has confided that he probably will be a candidate for the United States Senate, opposing Sena- tor Duncan U. Fletcher in 19 “I have been misquoted and gen- erally misunderstood in a statement credited to me and broadcast saying 1 have retired from politics and shall ot again be a candidate for office and P 5hail hereatter devote myself to history and literature, writing my memoirs and devoting myself to the story of my great campaigns and the history of the great times and the great events in which I have borne a part.” Mr. Bryan writes: “I did not say this. I have no inten- tlon of retiring from politics now or in the future, although I shall here- after devote much time to writing my memoirs and the history of the great times and events in which I have borne a part. This will absorb the most of my time.” Mr. Bryan is speaking frequently throughout the State. His public meetings are well attended. Senator Fletcher has sald he also will take the stump soon.
