CHICAGO, January 2.—Influenced by European reports that Argentine wheat Is belng held at higher prices than wheat from the United States, the wheat market here took a fresh upturn early today, but then heavy selling developed and a sharp decline ensued. An advance in iverpool Quotations helped to lift ¥ Chicago prices at the start. It was sald that considering differences in exchange rates, the Liverpool market was at the highest point yet for the 1924 crom Chicago opening prices, which varied from % to 1% higher, with May 1.79% to 1.80% and July 155 to L65%, were followed by a setback which in some cases went about 3 cents under the initial top prices. Mild weather tended to ease down corn and oats. After opening un- changed to % higher, May 130 to 1.30%, the corn market underwent a decided sag all around Oats started at % to % advance, May 64 to 64%, but later showed losses of material extent In the absence of any aggressive selling, the provision market averag- ed higher. Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 2—Optimism over the general trade outlook was reflected in an opening advance of 3'to 6 points in the cotton market here today. Bearish figures on available supply for the season led to some lo- cal and commission house selling, but the offerings were absorbed with the March contracts selling up to 24.82 and July to before the end of the first hour, or about 14 to 16 points net higher. Liverpool cables were somew lower, but their showing was offset by the advance in sterling exchange and the early buy- ing here was promoted by reports of contracts for a good early new year business in the cotton goods mar- ket IAL. §720,000 PEPCO 65 BEING PAID TODAY American Security Is Meet« ing Debentures—Trading on Local Exchange.
