NORFOLK, Va. January 2.-—The British freighter Western Valley is ashore and breaking up on the rocks in Heysham harbor, near Liverpool, an SOS message picked up at the Cape Hatteras radlo station early yester- day stated. Only a few stations in the United States succeeded in get- ting the name of the ship. The Western Valley, according to latest maritime records avallable here, was at Genoa, December 7, hav- ing arrived there that day from Swansea. Unfavorable radio conditions and the great distance from which the Western Valley's call came ca considerable confusion as to the loca- tion of the call.
