Stricken with a heart attack as he was awaiting a street car at Four- teenth and ¥ streets early last night, Col. Willlam Otway Owen, retired of- ficer of the Army Medical Corps and brother of Senator Robert I Owen of Oklahoma, died in an ambulance {en route to Kmergency Hospital. Mrs. Owen was with her husband when he was stricken and, aided by others, took him to a corner drug store, where treatment was given Dbefore the ambulance arrived. Johannes, jeweler and resi- dent of Washington for almost 60 vears, died at his home, 3149 Mount Pleasant strect, early today, after an illness of two months. Born in Baltimore January 29, 1855, the deceased lived later In New York City, and then came to Washington, where the firm of John G. Johannes was founded by his father in the Civil War period, later to be succeeded by the Ira H. Johannes Co., Inc. Mr. Johannes was a charter member of the old National Rifles, the ploneer- ing organization for the present Na- tional Guard. He was known widely as one of the fast disappearing old school of Washington business men. Thirteenth street, and has been per- petuated by the family of which he was a member since 1860. Recently Mr. Johannes took into partnership four of his employes, Joseph Scalia, Grover Veily, Jol Preller and Charles K. Ritter. Under the tutelags of Mr. Johannes, many jewelry mechanics now plying their trades in Wathington and else- where, as well as a number now en- gaged in the manufacturing jewelry business here, received thelr early training. Surviving Mr. Johannes widow, formerly Miss Katherine Dodd; a son, Dana; a daughter, Hat- tls, and a sister, Imogene Johannes, | all restding in this city.
