ROCKVILLE, Md, December (Special).—The annual Christm holiday dance of the Rockville A sembly was held in the opera hous last evening, attended by & large num- ber from Washington and other places. Miss Rose K. Dawson was chairman of the committee in charge, and the chaperons were Mrs. F. Bache « | they cles. I¥ also has aroused a variety of sentiments among merchants and manufacturers in the territory in volved. Moreover, it {8 now practi- cally certain that the step will be followed by similar action on the part of other mail order houses. To some merchants this trend sig- nifies nothing but a fight to the bitter end for local patronage against oppo- nents so powerful that they can buy in tremendous quantities and on ad- vantageous terms those goods which they do not make. To others. it ap- parently presents an opportunity to sell out thelr own businesses to the incoming competitors. Firat Store in Chicago. Sears, Roebuck & Co. plan to open their first retall department store in Chicago in February and to follow this by other branches in Seattle, Dal- las and Philadelphia, In. conjunction with the distributing plants the con- cern already operates in the North- west, the Southwest and the East. The company has given no indication of the plan of campalgn it will fol- low, except that the entry to the arena of retall merchandising will be ac- companied by no loud flourish of trumpets so far as buying out com- petitors is concerned. There is small doubt that long-es- tablished businesses will be offered either to Sears-Roebuck or to other mall order houses who follow thelr | example. But even if these are ac- cepted In some cases there is no in- dication of a grand smash In exist- ing conditions in the next six months. None of the firms involved say they will refuse to acquire old established businesses, and none of them are act- ive bidders for such concerns. Hints on Consolidations. It is generally accepted that the Philadelphia and New York stores of one of America’s pioneer merchants might be acquired by the Chicago company~at a price. This gossip is bolstered » by the fact that it ijr known the volume of business | through the distributing and assem- bling plant of Sears-Roebuck at Phil- adelphia has been fully satisfactors and has developed sources of trad. hitherto untouched through the cata- logue route It is said that the heirs of the pi- oneer merchant in question hold the Philadelphia store. property and trade at $70,000,000. But it is as- serted with equal positiveness that would not permit a continuance of the business under the present name after it passes out of posses- sion of the family. ‘This reluctanc it is said, has re- sulted in the fallure of negotiations with two or three large retail con- cerns which were desirous of ab- sorbing the business. andonment of the Philadelphia and ew York flelds by this pioneer con- cern s not belleved to be lack of | profits, but to a desire of certain of the heirs to retire from active par- ticipation In the marts of trade. Move Easy to Explal The move of Sears-Roebuck and r mall order houses into the de- partment store field is easy to un- derstand when the expansion of re- tail trade in the last two month is taken into consideration. first 11 months of this year the Sears- Roebuck sales The sales of the four order houses in the last two months have been nearly of the banner period of 1919. partment store sales for November and December have exceeded even the record-breaking distribution of the corresponding perlod of 1923. TRADE PASSES 1923. New Orleans Reports Slight Gain in Holiday Trade. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW ORELANS, December The Christmas business of retailers here was slightly ahead of that of last vear, they asserted today. Sales ran heavily to gifts of practical na- ture even for children, although there was no falling off in toy distribut- tion. Linens, dress goods, musical instruments, radio sets and jewelry were good sellers. Cold weather stimulated demand for clothing. Work has been started on the first unit of the Southern Baptist Hos pital here, which will cost more than $1,000,000. Contracts have been let also for erection of a theater at Canal and South Rampart streets which is to be financed by the Loew, Saenger and Erlanger interests. You will reason (rightly) that a house which has sold only safe bonds in the past is likely to be selling safe bonds now. Facts are the sturdy framework on which reputation is built. Miller First Mortgage Bonds have earned the reputation of never having caused a dollar’s loss to any investor. Underneath this record is the fact, among many others, that last year our bond issues averaged only 6224% of the appraised values of the properties we financed, leaving an average “margin of safety” of 374 %.
