ATLANTA, Ga., August 14.—The most intensive research yet under- taken to secure a means to eradicate the boll weevil will be begun at once at the Griffin, Ga., experimental station, under direction of the chemi- cal warfare division of the Army. Gen. Amos A. Fries, chief of the division, said that experts would bring from the Edgewood, Md., ar- senal 40 or 50 of the most deadly poisons known, far exceeding in toxic qualities the calcium arsenate now generally used against the shall try to find a way to annihilate the weevil by poison,” Gen. Fries added, “and we hope to interest leading civilian scientists in our work, which, if successful, will enrich the country by millions of dollars annually. NEW YORK, August 14.—Recent extensive readjustments from specu- lative accounts in the stock market are widely attributed to a disposition on the part of large traders to wait further indications of the trend of fall trade and the political campaign before adding to their commitments. Conversion of paper profits into cash has accounted for much of the recent heavy selling, particularly of indus- trial issues, which have enjoyed a large advance since the bull move- ment started more than two months ugo. ‘WOOL MARKET STRONG. BOSTON, August 14 (Special).— Wool sales were somewhat slower to- day, though some houses reported business still good. With estimates that 60 to 65 per cent of the 1924 do- mestic wool crop already is in the hands of manufacturers, prices for the remainder are firm, tending up- ward. The position of domestic wool, dealers say, never has been stronger | than at present. RUSH NEW RAILROAD. NEW YORK, August 14.—The Florida, Western and Northern Rail- road, whose acquisition by the Sea- board Air Line Railway has been approved by the Interstate Commerce Commission, probably will be in oper- ation by January 1, ready for the coming Florida traflic and passen- ger season, according to S. PORTLAND, Oreg., August 14.— Fully 500 carloads of fresh prunes from Oregon and Washington have been contracted for by Eastern in- terests, at prices ranging from 1 to 1% cents a pound bulk, net, to growers. This is the first time any large quantity of fresh prunes have been contracted for Eastern ship- ment from Clark County and the Williamette Valley, and means that . the dried fruit market will be great- Iy relieved in consequence.
