GAS MASKS T0.EQUIP RAILWAY MAIL FORCE Protection for Clerks Provided, Due to Recent $2,000,000 Rob- bery Near Rondout, Il BANDITS USED TEAR GAS War Department - Supplies the Neoessary Safeguards. Gas ‘masks to equip mail clerks in the 5,096 railway postal cars will be ebtained from the War Department, as the result of negotiations opened by Acting Postmaster General Bart- lett with Secretary Weeka. This_is the answer of the Post Office Department to bandits who, on June 12, forced their way with tear Eas into railway mail cars near Ron- dout, Ill, and rified them of nearly $2.000,000 in money and securities. Total losses resulting from hold- ups of mail trains and other postal &gencies from 1921 to 1923 amounted to $11,217,209, while the recoveries for the same period were $7,200,1932, leaving an actual loss of $§3,017,017. It is not regarded as likely that all the railway mail clerks will at first be given gas masks, but their use will_be confined mainly, in the be- ginning, to use on trains running through certain metropolitan areas where criminality is more abundant.
