FOUR BANKS IN WARSAW STOP BUSINESS TODAY[ Bankruptcy Results From Specula- | tion, Mostly on Fall of French | Franc, Is Report. WARSAW. May 7.—Four Warsaw banks suspended payments today, their bankruptcy being caused by apeculation, mostly on the fall of the French franc. The, present improve. ment in Poland’s financial situation is expected to be follow fail- ures of numerous bank v of which profited through Speculation | during the financial chaos of the last two years. Failure of a number of Viennese banks is also expected to affect Polish houses connected with them. Several textile houses at Lodz have failed, partly because of the hi taxation and the high cost of credit, \which has reached 10 per cent month- 1y, but largely because of specuiation, s the dealers speculating on the fall of the mark closed their transactions for the spring calculating on a dollar worth 30,000,000 marks. while begin- ning with January the dollar has re- mained steadily under ten million marks. BANKERS OPTIMISTIC. ‘See Clearing of Business Situation to Follow Tax Legislation. BALTIMORE, May 7 (Special).— bankers are beginning to feel more optimistic over the business sit- uation. They say that trade has been Awalting a change in the tax legisla- tion. Money market was never so favor- able to development in every direc- {ion. The government, the banks, in- dustry and the people are all well suppiled. Money and credit are in excess of present demand. Hence money Tates are ruling low. —— A Fool and Hix Money. NEW YORK, May 6.—Manufactur- ers of carbonated beverages—soda water, in other words—ars celebrat- ing today the 100th anniversary of the starting of the industry in this country. C., WEDNESDAY, NORTHWEST TRADE DROPS Sharp Slump in Business Expected to Be Shortlived. ST. PAUL, May 7 (Special). orth- western trade has fallen off sharply in the last few days, although the slump is expected to be shortltved. The depression is attributed to the heated fight in the municipal elec- tions between the radical labor and conservative elements, the closing of one of the trust and sav- ings banks and the amalgamation of two other banking institutions, which, it s feared, have temporarily unset- tled public opinfon. As a whole, St. Paul and Minneapo- lis banks are in excellent condition, deposits having increased and loans and discounts decreased since ary 1. Buying volume in the north- west, however, fell off $23,000,000 last week, although total jobbing sales since the first of the year are about 8 per cent larger than a year ago. With a good agricultural yield, there is a feeling the nor! west is due for a substantial trad expansion late this summer. BOURSE PRICES HEAVY. PARIS, May 7.—Prices were heav on the bourse today.
