At one time, when it looked as if Hiram. were capable of giving the President a real fight for the nomination, there were coast Repub- licans, who would have voted and fought for Coolidge. There is a very strong league of nations sentiment in Cali- fornia, particularly in the populous south. Johnson's bitter isolationist views have estranged that community from him.
