y REAL BEDTIME STORIE The Unfair Hunters. Alas, that it should be so rare To find & bunter who is fair. —Jerry Muskrat. Jerry Muskrat, sitting forlorn, mis- erable and frightened 5n a little plat- form of trash that had caught in a crotch of a tree just at the level of the water which had flooded the Green Meadows, caught sight of something moving over the water in the dis- tance At first he couldn’t make out ‘what it was. You see it was too far away. As it drew néarer it grew big- ger. en his heart gave a little jump of fright. He knew what.it was. It was a boat. Jerry had been down to the Big River and had seen boats there. He knew that boats were used se dreadful, two-legged crea- tures called men. Anxiously Jerry watched that boat ESTATE. of the boat. The rower saw him and spoke to the hunter. But by the time the hunter could turn with his terri- ble gun Jerry had once more dived. This time Jerry had seen a mass of floating rubbish. He made straifht tor it under watér. When he came up he came up underneath it, and could poke his nose out to get fresh air without being seen. There he re- mained while those~hunters rowed about and watched for him. At last they gave up and rowed away. “it isn't fair! It {sn't fair'® Jer Kkept saying over and over to himseif. “Those hunters are not fair! They know I have no place to go and are hunting me when I am helpless.” And indeed it wasn't fair. Nothing could have been more unfalr. Jerry Muskrat and others of his kind have troubles enough and dangers enough without heing hunted by men with terrible guns. i ' (Copyright, 1024, by T. W. By the Associated Press, WHITE PLAINS, N. Y., May 3.— Investigation of the actions of,clnr- énce O. Baring, charged by hix wife With trying to kill her with poison and disease germs, was suspended yesterday for the rest of the week, With the district attorney trying to determine whether it was Mrs. Baring or another woman Baring intended to_accompany on a trip to Europe. Baring admitted that he had plan- ned the tour and booked reservations for the round trip, the subpoenaed books of a tourist agency substanti- ating the statement. The district at- torney has endeavored to show that a pgesible cause for the alleged poi- soning was a desire by Baring to free himself from his wife to conduct an affair with another woman. Charles E. Long, Baring’s attorney, yesterday stated that Baring had kept his plans sccret from his wife because he wanted to surprise her. He said Buring had used the same photograph of himself and his wife for the pass- ports as previously had been used. Gets Howard U. Post. Capt. Frank E.
